Are You Aware? (EqUUal Access)

Accessibility and Inclusion Ministry (AIM) “is a joint program of the Unitarian Universalist Association and EqUUal Access, a Unitarian Universalist organization working to enable the full engagement of people with disabilities and their families in our congregations.” Our Disability Support Group (DSG) is a collaboration of persons with disabilities, friends, and families working to raise awareness of the needs within our congregation that promote “full engagement.” One goal of the DSG is to work toward full inclusion by becoming a welcoming, AIM congregation.

You can help by supporting accessibility, inclusion, and participation for everyone at UUCCSM. If you have concerns about how disabilities are impacting you or someone you know, come to a DSG meeting. We are a place to talk.

You can also help by talking with the Disability Support Group and others in the Church about ways to improve support for persons with disabilities in our church community, or by sharing your concerns and needs. Not sure whom to contact; look for Mark Christiansen, Michael Young, Steve Young, or Sylvia Young.

Parents Take Note: Friendly Beasts Tune-ups Start Nov. 6

Once again, our preschool through elementary-aged children will sing “The Friendly Beasts” song at our holiday
pageant Sunday, December 18, at both services. As in years past, all involved children will sing the first and last verses of the song. Small groups of children will sing the middle five verses, dressed in a costume appropriate to the animals speaking in that verse (brown donkeys, red and white cows, dogs, doves, or mice). Our pre-schoolers sing the mice verse, and the older children pick which of the other animals they want to be.

We have costumes for our beasts from previous years. Older kids who don’t want to dress as an animal but do want to sing are welcome to be shepherds.

Religious Exploration teachers and parents, please note: I will lead Sunday rehearsals (about 10 minutes long) that occur in the RE classrooms during both services. Below is the rehearsal schedule, including a dress rehearsal that occurs Saturday morning, December 17, just after the RE Pancake Breakfast.

November 6: Preschoolers–grade 5: 10 minutes each classroom
November 13: Preschoolers–grade 5: 10 minutes each classroom
November 20: Preschoolers–grade 5: 10 minutes each classroom
November 27: Group rehearsal for all at RE beginning
December 4: Preschoolers–grade 5: 10 minutes each classroom
December 11: Group rehearsal for all at RE beginning
December 17, (Saturday): RE Pancake Breakfast at 8 am in Forbes Hall, Friendly Beasts dress rehearsal in Sanctuary from 9:30 to 10:30 am, and more fun (including a bounce house) for the kids after the rehearsal!
December 18: Pageant! (both services)

Call or e-mail me with questions. I look forward to working with your friendly beasts once again this year!

Happy hour begins at 5:45 pm

Join the Green Committee as we host a special celebration featuring a progressive meal and full UUSM campus tour: committee members and your meal will move around the church facility, pointing out the many green features that we have all supported and added to our campus over the years. We are providing vegetarian main dishes, including one from members of Community Services Unlimited (CSU), who will be touring with us. CSU received our Generous Contribution for April. They provide programs that use food-based learning as a tool to help urban communities in Los Angeles adopt healthier lifestyles, build youth leaders, and increase neighborhood political consciousness regarding food access and environmental justice. As you are able, please bring appropriate side dishes, salads, desserts, etc. to go with the vegetarian main dishes. Please also help cut down on waste and work by bringing your own plates and silverware.

Are You Aware (Accessibility)?

Some parts of our church facilities are inaccessible to church attendees who use walkers, wheelchairs, or canes for mobility, or who see steps and stairs as a challenge.

You can help all attend and feel welcome by scheduling meetings and other activities in the areas that are most
accessible.

You can help by talking with the Disability Support Group and others in the church about ways to improve support for persons with disabilities in our church community, or by sharing your concerns and needs. Not sure whom to contact? Look for Mark Christiansen, Michael Young, Steve Young, or Sylvia Young.

Celebrate a Life of Giving to Help Our World

Please join us in Forbes Hall for High Tea, Saturday, October 22, 2 pm, as we salute, honor and thank our minister emeritus, the Rev. Ernie pipes, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. The Pipes Lecture Committee, the UU Santa Monica Board of Directors, the Rev. Rebecca Benefiel Bijur, the Rev. Emerita Judith Meyer, and the Rev. Dr. Bill Schulz extend a hearty invitation to everyone who has ever been touched by the grace, wit, intelligence, and helpfulness of Rev. Ernie Pipes as we host a celebratory High Tea. Come with reminiscences, photos — anything you might want to share. Many of us joined UU Santa Monica due to Ernie’s service; now, let us collectively thank him for all he has given — and continues to give — to make ours a better world. But, one caveat. You must RSVP to the church office by October 14 so that we can plan refreshments. RSVP to office@uusm.org or by phone to (310) 829-5436 x 102. Thank you.

September 11 — A Community of Covenant
In consultation with our minister, we are continuing the Heart and Soul services, now led by Kikanza Nuri-Robins, Joyce Holmen, and Karen Hsu Patterson. With singing and instrumental music, statements and questions, silence and sharing, we’ll explore these themes:
October 9 — A Community of Healing

December 11 — A Community of Presence, (a virtual service: we’ll send resources by email)

Other committee members are Mary Romanek, Andrea Steffan, and Jacki Weber. As the author Margaret J. Wheatley observes, “Nothing exists in isolation. We have to stop pretending we are individuals who can go it alone.” So let’s make some time to consider together what Community means to us.

Save the Dates and Spread the Word - Salute Minister Emeritus Ernie Pipes October 22-23 as He Turns 90

Affectionately known as Ernie, the Rev. Ernest D. Pipes has served Unitarian Universalism in the Pacific Southwest District since 1956, including 35 years in the pulpit at our Santa Monica congregation. Born October 6, 1926, Ernie celebrates his 90th birthday next month. Gracious as always, he has allowed UU Santa Monica to throw him a birthday luncheon Saturday, October 22, and to celebrate with him at receptions following our 9 and 11 am services Sunday, October 23, which will in turn be followed by the 25th Annual Ernest D. Pipes Lecture.

This anniversary year, the Pipes Lecturer will be the Rev. Dr. William F. “Bill” Schulz, who delivered the first Pipes lecture. Rev. Schulz, a longtime friend of Ernie, has served as president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, executive director of Amnesty International USA, and, until July of this year, as president and CEO of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. Our minister emerita, the Rev. Judith Meyer, will preach the Sunday services October 23 and join in the weekend celebration of Ernie and in remembering his wife and partner in ministry, Maggie Pipes, who died in 2012.

All are welcome! Many thanks to Patrick McGuire, the lead organizer of the festivities. Dave Olson has generously offered his Brentwood home and gardens for the luncheon, which is tentatively planned for 1 pm Saturday, October 22 (Forbes Hall if rain). Please RSVP to office@uusm.org or by phone to the church office if you plan to attend the Saturday luncheon. If you have any questions or thoughts about the celebration, please contact Patrick. There will be more details in the October newsletter.

The UU Banner is Installed!

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS

August 21 will be our Ingathering Services at 9 am and 11 am! In this experimental year, we are trying out realigning the church year with the calendars of many local schools, including the Santa Monica-Malibu School District and Los Angeles Unified School District, which begin well before Labor Day. This will give us an early Ingathering Service August 21, when kids are going back to school, and also allow us, especially our families with kids, to get into our rhythm of two services for a few weeks before our annual all-church weekend at Camp de Benneville Pines September 16 to 18.

Focus on GA

Dining for Dollars...

...has collected over $32,000 in revenue for the church and we expect the final numbers to be even higher, coming close to or even topping last year’s total! There is an unpaid balance of $1,300 so if you haven’t paid for your winning bids, please do so ASAP. This year’s success is due in great part to the Chair of the D4$ committee, Farrokh Allen, and the contributions of our electronic chief, Melinda Ewen, and the rest of the team: Sue Moore, Sheila Cummins, Nancy Howell, Barbara Gibbs, AND Garland Allen. And of course we must add to that the “village” of a few other electronic specialists AND as listed in the April newsletter, the nearly 100 congregational members who stepped forward this year to host an event. Congratulations one and all on this outstanding outcome!

We are beginning to reassess how we communicate through our print and online newsletters and announcements and would love some fresh eyes. Contact Jacki Weber and the team at newsletter@uusm.org

Conversations About Death Group to Honor Cassandra on April 11

Cassandra Christenson created a group a year ago at church that has given opportunities to learn from compassionate experts about end-of-life issues as well as to explore our feelings. Meeting twice a month, a steady core group, plus lots of drop-ins, has been a special place to ask questions to help cope with death and to prepare for the process of dying. On Monday, April 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in Forbes Hall, you’re invited for a celebration of Cassandra’s inspiring leadership and insights. Then on Monday, April 25, also 7:00 to 8:30, learn more about being an advocate for someone you love: Amy Lacombe will share her family’s experiences during her mother’s hospice care. Joyce Holmen will be facilitating the group that evening and on May 9 and 23. For more information contact Cassandra or Joyce.

Newslettter Editor Resignation

After five years as an editor and then the editor-inchief and a regular designer of the UU Santa Monica newsletter, Charles Haskell has decided to retire from his roles with the newsletter as of this issue. We will greatly miss his steady hand, care and patience, nearly always accommodating our late articles and edits. His expertise as a writer, editor, and photographer has been invaluable in maintaining the quality of our church’s main vehicle of communication. Charles also brought to the newsletter his experience of more than three decades of efforts in nurturing the life of our congregation, including President of the Board and membership and chairmanship on committees such as Finance, Pulpit, Faith in Action, and Bylaws. We thank Charles for the impact his leadership has made on the newsletter and congregation, and wish him and his wife, Christine, well in their future pursuits.
