We are delighted to welcome Nevenka as our guest musicians, this morning. Nevenka is a Los

Angeles-based women's folk chorus performing songs from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia, Albania,

Russia, Greece, and Georgia, as well as Ladino Sephardic and Romani songs. The group was formed in

1976 by women who shared a common interest in the complex harmonies and compelling rhythms

typical of Balkan music. Very much in the Eastern European tradition, Nevenka includes women of all

Nevenka: The Meaning Behind the Songs

Aqvavebula: Georgian (traditional instruments), A young man professes his love to his honey-eyed

sweetheart. He says, “Come, I will be part of you and together we will conquer the mountains”.

Dragana I Slaveya: Bulgarian (choral), A young woman has a singing contest with a nightingale. If

Dragana wins, she can clip the bird’s wings and keep it for a pet. If the bird wins, Dragana will have to

cut off her beautiful braid. Dragana wins the contest, but she lets the bird have its freedom.

Pecen Za Angel: Bulgarian (choral), A mother says to her son, “Don’t go off to war – instead take a

wife and have children.” He replies that he must go to protect his country.

Dushko Moja: Ukrainian, Romany (guitar, mandolin, violin & drum), The man singing this song is

ending his affair with his lover because he can no longer split his love between two women!

Rasodi Se Tenka Neda: Bulgarian (choral), Young Neda goes to the well for water and there she has a

flirtatious encounter with a young man.

is a UU camp in the San Bernardino National Forest, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles. Since 1962,

Unitarian Universalists have gathered in the pines to experience the wonder of the natural world

while deepening their connections to their faith and one another. This year the all-church camp

weekend will be September 18-20, and registration is now open. Please register with our Camp Dean,

this morning. Alison is a freelance harpist who teaches and performs in the Los Angeles area. She is a

member of Southwest Chamber Music, Golden State Pops Orchestra and MUSE/IQUE; she has performed

with the San Diego Symphony, Pasadena Symphony/Pops Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony and Long

Beach Opera. Notable recordings include winning the 2014 Grammy for Best Classical Compendium:

"Partch: Plectra and Percussion Dances.” In addition to the harp, Alison also plays the Kithara, (an

instrument created for the music of Harry Partch), teaches Music Appreciation at Pasadena City College,

This month, 60% of our offering will go to benefit the Camp DeBenneville Pines. DeBenneville Pines

is a UU camp in the San Bernardino National Forest, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles. Since 1962,

Unitarian Universalists have gathered in the pines to experience the wonder of the natural world

while deepening their connections to their faith and one another. This year the all-church camp

weekend will be September 18-20, and registration is now open. Please register with our Camp Dean,

Jacki Weber. As with all church programs, if the registration fee is a barrier, please let Jacki or the

minister know, as scholarships are available, jacki.weber@gmail.com.

A warm welcome to our musical guest this morning, Ruben Villalobos. Ruben Villalobos is a talented

and energetic guitar/sitar/keyboard player who has worked with such artists/producers as Ikey Owens

(Jack White, Mars Volta, Free Moral Agents, Sublime) & Miguel Happoldt (Sublime.) Mostly a live

player, he has worked with a handful of bands as a studio musician playing trumpet and sitar as well.

Today, 60% of our offering will go to The General Assembly Planning Committee Matching Grant

Program . The G.A. Planning Committee Matching Grant Program is a fund that helps congregations

send members to General Assembly who otherwise could not afford to go. The fund is available to

match funding - raised or allocated by local congregations - to help their members pay for registration

and travel costs so they can attend General Assembly. More information can be found at

Thanks to Las Colibri, our guest musicians this morning. Los Colibri, or “The Hummingbirds” have a

passion for music, beauty and girl power! These women form a one-of-a-kind experience to witness as

they combine the all-string instrumentation of the early 20th century mariachi tradition with the

colorful, feminine costumes of the cinematic divas of the 1940’s and 50’s. After years of achieving

success individually as instrumentalists and vocalists, these women have come together to create

their own blend of vocal harmonies, unique arrangements, and interpretation of traditional sones,

huapangos and rancheras.
