Lu Xun says,  "Hope can be neither affirmed nor denied. Hope is like a path in the countryside: originally there was no path—yet, as people are walking all the time in the same spot, a way appears."
The Unitarian Universalist Church calls us to take action in the world to live out our Seven Priciples.  How do we approach change in a process-oriented way that we can sustain so that a path appears for us and for others?

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught non-violence as a philosophy, a spiritual practice, and a strategy. A key principle was that "nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people." Activists often overlook the final step of the King strategy, which is reconciliation. How do we practice Kingian nonviolence in all parts of our lives?

FIA Craft Fair

This year’s UUSM Member Art Wall will feature: Jeremy Arnold, Bettye Barclay, Bob Dietz, DRE Kathleen Hogue, Cynthia Kelly, Amy Lacombe, Kim Miller, Ralph Martel, Carol Ring, Diana Spears and Greg Wood.

The FIA Craft Fair is also an annual event benefitting the Committees under the overall umbrella of FIA: the Green Committee, which deals with climate issues and overall sustainability, they were instrumental in bringing the church updated to win sustainability award (including an alley plug-in for electric or hybrid cars) and they also work with a South Central community's program of sustainability to the central city poor; the Hunger Taskforce which does monthly Lunches for Bunches; and the Peace and Social Justice Committee, which has worked with car wash workers (and was able to get one car wash to unionize), works with CLUE to support worker's rights and living wage, works with detainees, and supports one member who was arrested at a KKK rally; Peace and Social Justice also does prison support work (school supplies and letter writing), and a recent campaign which supplied backpacks to the homeless filled with donated goods (toothpaste, socks, soap, etc.), soon to be an annual event.

The Faith In Action Craft Fair sells artisan wares (jewelry, pottery, paintings ,etc.); gourmet edibles and other new and exciting items. We also display further information about the involved Committees to keep people informed - especially the non-church members who come to event.

Faith in Action Committee

June Art Wall : Faith in Action Committee
OpeningReception: Sun, June 3, 11 am to 12:30 pm.  Forbes Hall

Please join us in June when we will present art and other inspiring visuals from UUSM’s own Faith In Action Committee. Activism has never been more important – so come and get inspired. The Faith In Action Commission (FIA) is an umbrella group composed of four committees – Peace and Social Justice (PSJ), Green Living, Hunger Task Force, and Interweave. Over the past year, FIA has participated in many events throughout Los Angeles, including the Women’s March, March for Science, the March for Our Lives, Interfaith Solidarity March, and more.
Last year’s Art Wall was a tremendous success, and also a wonderful and timely reminder of the important work we do in the community. The show will run through Sun, June 24.
