Conversations and Connections

Conversations and Connections.  Saturday, March 16, 10am to 12pm.  Forbes Hall.
Julia Jonathan has attended most of our gatherings, and she writes:
“Don’t miss out! Conversations and Connections (10-12pm March 16 in Forbes) is an opportunity to engage in a unique and unparalleled experience that will connect you to other members of the congregation in a very deep and meaningful way. In pairs we take turns speaking and listening and then dialogue on what has been shared based upon topics chosen by our wonderful facilitators. I wouldn’t miss this for the world.”

PSJ - screening "Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States”

What the heck is happening in Israel/Palestine?  Why has the conflict been going on for seven decades with no resolution in sight?

The Peace and Social Justice Committee invites you to watch and discuss “Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States,” screening Sunday, September 9, at 7:30 in the sanctuary—after Second Sunday Supper.  We are fortunate to have Estee Chandler introduce the documentary and lead a Q&A.  Estee is the Jewish American daughter of an Israeli father and an American mother.  She launched a Los Angeles chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) in 2010 and was recently elected to its National Board of Directors.  She co-hosts the weekly KPFK radio show Middle East in Focus.

According to Robert Jensen, Professor of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, “In the conflict over the land of Palestine, Israel’s overpowering military superiority has produced decisive battlefield victories. But just as crucial to Israeli dominance in that region is its supremacy in the U.S. news media, which is captured in the title of an important new film from the Media Education Foundation, “The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States.”… The film’s analysis is crucial to understand why—given the longstanding international consensus for a peaceful settlement that would give both Israelis and Palestinians a secure national homeland—the conflict drags on in its seventh decade. Whatever one’s position on how to resolve the conflict, it is uncontroversial that Israel could not continue occupying Palestinian territory without U.S. diplomatic, military, and economic support, and it’s unlikely that support could continue without the backing—or, at least, acquiescence—of the U.S. public.”

Because the film has been repeatedly attacked and misrepresented by right-wing pressure groups and ignored by virtually all corporate media outlets and North American film festivals, its publisher Media Education Foundation is making the film available for streaming at no cost.

The film will be introduced and Q&A will be led by Estee Chandler, local leader of Jewish Voice for Peace and co-host of KPFK’s Middle East in Focus.

Free parking will be available at the structure at 16th Street and Arizona Ave.  A reception will follow the program.  For more information, please call 310-829-5436.

The Cosmos: An Exhibition by Raoul de la Sota, Olga Seem, Howard Swerdloff

Join us for the Opening Reception for The Cosmos on Sunday, August 5 from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Three artists with very interesting talents will be showing their recent works. The show is open every Sunday from 9:30 am until noon and on weekdays by appointment and will run through August 26.

Raoul de la Sota received his Bachelors and Masters of Arts from UCLA. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for a year art studies in Peru, which changed his life by exposing him to a culture rich in folklore, cosmological beliefs and artistic marvels. He taught painting, drawing and Mexican Art History at Los Angeles City College until 2015. “My interest in cosmic subject matter came from the myths of various cultures that I discussed in my Art History classes. These stories have influenced my work for the past six years in which I have artistically explored the Northwest Coast, Inuit, Navajo, Mayan and Incan sky beliefs,” says de la Sota. “The work in this exhibit illustrates the sky from the Far East to the horizons close to us in the western world.”

Olga Seem says, “As I reach my autumnal years my work has segued from ocean subject-matter to the celestial. My choice of subject is always in flux. Current work is involved with interpreting the world of planets and their counterparts. However, I have not abandoned my interest in sea life, as I see a metaphorical relationship between sea and sky.”

Howard Swerdloff describes himself as an eclectic artist who has created original, non-mainstream works of art for the past 40 years. He mixes media from painting to wood sculpture to ceramics to gourd art with fluid dexterity, intersecting cultures and disciplines without barriers. As an artist and designer he has become a favorite resource for many celebrated artists in the Los Angeles area, including the renowned artists Frank Romero, Charles Dixon, Raoul de la Sota, Pat Boyd and many others, creating design elements, fabrication, and presentation design. He has been a gallery owner and curator for numerous exhibitions, performances and artist dialogues.

Contact our Art Director, Beverly Alison for further information about this show or about exhibiting on our Art Wall.
