Bonnie Lambert will be showing New Light, a collection of her most recent works in vivid oils, in the gallery in Forbes Hall in October. You will likely recognize the locations of some of the subjects of her paintings. The Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, October 7, from 12:00–1:30 pm. The exhibit will be open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm and on weekdays by appointment. It will run through October 28. It is free and open to the public.

In Lambert’s words: “Using vibrant color and expressive brushstrokes, my oil paintings contrast the beauty of the natural world with the ‘hand of man’ in local urban settings. Nature plays a prominent role in my use of color and light. I’m drawn to spectacular sunsets and sunrises, the shock of skies before and after showers, late afternoon light stretching long shadows, and fog blurring the world.

“My mission is to communicate the joyous, wild beauty of nature reflected through urban spaces. I ask viewers to observe objects so common that they’ve become invisible, and to see them in a new light.”

Lambert earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and she was a professional actress for nearly two decades. In the early 1990s she studied art for two years at The Art Center School of Design in Pasadena before she met her mentor–museum-collected Latina artist Margaret Garcia in 2009. Since Lambert’s first solo exhibit in 2011, she has participated in more than 80 shows and exhibitions in galleries and museums. Her theatrical background lends natural drama and mystery to her work which brings out joy and celebration.

Congregational Meeting

All members in good standing who have been members for at least 40 days prior to the Annual Meeting are eligible to vote. Come to the meeting on May 19; let your voice be heard.

The Nominating Committee will present its slate of nominees for the open seats on the UUSM Board of Directors and Nominating Committee to the board by April 18. The slate will be posted in the church office on or before April 19. It is the charge of the Nominating Committee to nominate one person per open position.

Any member of the congregation who chooses to run by petition for any open position on the Board or Nominating Committee will also appear on the ballot. Any member of the church who has been a voting member for at least a year may run: submit your petition, signed by 10 or more voting members, to the church office. All submitted petitions and signatures must be reviewed by board Secretary Norm Richey for validation by April 29, 2019.

The final ballot for the May 19 elections will be included in a church mailing to be sent in early May. New and renewing members who are read into the rolls at the April 9 board meeting will become voting members after 40 days, and thus will be eligible to vote.

Board of Directors

The president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer serve 1-year terms, so those positions appear on the ballot every year. These officers can be nominated to the same position for three consecutive terms.

Members-at-large serve 2-year terms and may serve three consecutive terms.

Nominating Committee

There are two open seats on the Nominating Committee that will appear on the ballot for 3-year terms.

Budget and other issues

The budget for church year 2019-20 will also be discussed and voted on. There’s lots going on, so other issues may need your thoughtful consideration. Check your mailer, then come and vote.

Members may vote in person, by proxy, or by absentee ballot. A quorum is needed, so please come to the meeting and vote in person. Your presence, your voice, and your enthusiasm for our beloved community is needed and welcomed.

Have you been looking for the secret? The holy grail? The promise of healing love and inner peace? You can have it. But first you have to give up all the Gods beyond who've promised to save you. Give up the ancient paths, the prophecies, the potions or the poses. Give up everything except the path leading back to the 'High Lonesome.' The path will take you where you need to go. And only when you arrive, will you know how to unlock the peace you went there to find.

Trigger Warning from Rev. Greg: The service this Sunday will contain information about the oppression of women. In the service, I will lift up material by women about women’s experiences. And yet, a key aim of the conversation is to preach beyond the choir and have a conversation with men. Studies, polls and the recent Senate Confirmations (unfortunately, one of far too many illustrations to prove the point) make it clear that men on the whole are not fully imagining, grasping or believing the chronic history of women’s pain and suffering. My approach will not be to shame men or stand them up as targets of anger; but, rather, to #believeher, to see the millions of ways women are targeted everyday, to understand the pain that has systematically been disregarded, disbelieved and dismissed and recognize the anger and despair that results. This trigger warning is for women wishing to avoid the re-stimulation of previous trauma and pain; not for men who want to remain on the periphery. Women, bring the men in your lives. Men, bring your friends. This is an opportunity to demonstrate care and support for half of our collective humanity. After the service, men are invited for a conversation exploring what that support might look like.

This is a conversation for men who want to explore ways to support women – starting with understanding women’s pain of living in a culture awash in gender-based oppression.  This is for all men – especially those who may not see themselves as part of the problem, but who are beginning to see that success requires them to become part of the solution.   Lunch will be provided.

Heart and Soul is a contemplative worship service series that occurs on the second Sunday of each month. It is a shorter, more intimate service, with singing, statements, and questions, silence, and sharing. Readings, poems, quotes, and music are drawn from a variety of sources, including the UU Soul Matters Sharing Circle, our hymnals, and popular/folk music.

Please note audio is currently unavailable for Heart & Soul services.
