Babies, Bathwater and the Belonging that is Our Birthright

We are living in an age of disillusion.  Some of the fundamental ideals we were taught to accept and revere in our younger days, turn out to be unhelpful - even hurtful - when we task them with guiding us through the complexities of this new age.  It is tempting to throw out everything we were told - lock, stock and barrel - and turn to our own wits and self-reliance to get us through.  But sometimes throwing the baby out with the bathwater is a recipe for cynicism.  And we are forced to ask ourselves whether it might be better to rebuild what we have left behind.

Many religious communities celebrate an annual 'Blessing of the Animals"" at church.  And for good reason: animals - and especially our pets - are the one thing we count on to show us the love we dearly need in life.  Whether it is a tail that loyally wags when you walk in, the head that rises up to be touched by your hand, the sound of purring as it lays in your lap, a bundles of fuzzy snuggles, something that sings in the cage or even something just a little slimey that makes you happy, you'll have to join us for our Annual Pet Blessing Service.

Please bring your pet to church in the safest way possible - for them to feel safe as well as other animals around them.  If coming to church is not your pet's idea of comfort and reassurance, bring a toy they like to play with and a picture of them so that they can be blessed in the same way they provide a blessing to you.

Adult Programs - "A Year to Live" by Rev Greg

The class began October 10, 2018.  The class is full.  No late sign ups.

This is a class for those who are tired of waiting around for their “real life” to start. It is a class that will jump start us out of our ruts, our avoidance, our fears, our unrealistic fantasies and propel us into more ac-ceptance, more focus, more intentional, more accountability and surround us with people who will love us into the people we’ve always wanted to be.

RRT - Listening Circle

Please join the Right Relations Team and Support in welcoming the the new church year by attending the first Listening Circle of the year.  All are invited.

We will be reflecting on questions of how we are fulfilled by church, what barriers may exist, and whether this influences how we show up for each other.  Listening Circles provide an opportunity to speak our truths respectfully, without being offered advice, "fixing" or feedback, in a supportive environment.

Give it another try on Sunday, September 30th from 1-3pm, Southeast Cottage, snacks provided.

Stop by the Right Relations Table after services for more information, or contact us at rightrelations@uusm.org

RRT - Covenant Workshop

On Sunday, October 14th, from 12.45-4pm, the Right Relations Team and Support will hold our third Covenant Workshop in the Sanctuary and Forbes Hall.  During past workshops, you identified the commitments you found meaningful, which formed the basis of the Congregational Covenant of Right Relations, and subsequently practiced how to self-regulate when angered, how to connect and listen deeply, and how to unearth the unmet needs that drive conflict.  Our upcoming workshop addresses how we live out our covenantal commitments, focusing on the first two sections of the Congregational Covenant:  Caring and Compassion, and Communication.  As before, the workshop will be highly interactive and practical, and it will include special guest speakers from other church committees.

Please sign up at the Right Relations Table after either service, or contact us on-line through rightrelations@uusm.org.

Walk-ins are welcome.  Snacks will be available.

ZAP: An Exhibition by Artists in Eastern Zimbabwe

ZAP: An exhibition by Artists in Eastern Zimbabwe
Opening Reception Sunday, September 2
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM • Forbes Hall

zimbabweart.jpgJoin us for the September Art Wall Opening Reception for ZAP (the Zimbabwe Artists Project) on Sunday, September 2nd from 11:00am to 12:30pm. ZAP roots go back to 1982 when a social activist created a training center to bring badly needed income to the Weya region of Eastern Zimbabwe. The show is open every Sunday from 9:30 am until 12 noon and on weekdays by appointment. It will run through Sunday, September 30.

ZAP partners with Weya artists to strengthen self-sufficiency, build cultural understanding, and create educational opportunities. Two years after Zimbabwe’s independence, the Weya Community Training Centre was founded by the social and political activist, Amon Shonge. The Center was built to offer vocational courses about agriculture, carpentry, motor mechanics, dress-making, etc. to members of the local community. In 1987 Weya Art was added. Zimbabwe went through some rough times but the center was given new life when students from two U.S. universities visited and brought back art work from the center. These are the roots of ZAP.

ZAP buys art directly from the artists and sells it to people in the U.S. who are looking for beautiful and meaningful art and who want to support their artistic talents.

Women of the Weya region are subsistence farmers, mothers, householders, and artists. Sales help women afford food, clothing, school fees, medicines, transport, seeds and fertilizer. The market for Weya art in Zimbabwe is extremely limited, sales in the U.S. are critical. ZAP celebrates the artistry and accomplishments of these talented women (and a few men) and supports their efforts to become economically self-sufficient.
