Isabel Martinez
UU Santa Monica’s November art exhibit, The Inner World of Isabel Martinez, features Martinez’s crosses, mixed media works, and oil paintings representing, in part, the spiritual side of her journey as a Latina immigrant. Meet the artist at the Opening Reception on Sunday, November 1 from 12:00 noon – 1:30pm. This event is free and open to the public from 9:00 am – 1:30 pm on Sundays through November 29 and on weekdays by appointment.

Martinez was born in a rural community in Mexico, studied at San Carlos Academy, and immigrated to Los Angeles in 1986. The works on display are from her ‘Vigin Series’ about which she says. “I am representing everyday people; and the idea behind of this series is that everybody has divinity inside. In the crosses, I began representing Aztec gods and goddesses. I am using the cross, because it is a universal symbol that represents human beings, where the vertical part represents spirituality and the horizontal part represents the material side… I convey my feelings, my inspiration and my soul to metaphorically represent my love of people and places where I felt loved and secure. I left my rural community when I was very little, but my community never left me.”

Martinez works have been in national and international exhibitions and in these books: Chicana and Chicano Art, Chicano Art for Our Millennium, Triumph of Our Communities, Painting the Towns, and from the University of Notre Dame, Caras Vemos, Corazones No Sabemos (Faces Seen, Hearts Unknown).

Acclaimed Artist Yasman Moradi Presents the Series Roumi
Please join us for an exhibit featuring a series of works dedicated to the 13th century Sufi mystic poet Moulana Jalaledin Roumi by acclaimed artist Yasman Moradi. Please help us welcome Moradi to the Artist Opening Reception on Sunday, October 4, from 12 pm to 1:30 pm in Angeline Forbes Hall. The show will run through Sunday, October 25.

Moradi exhibits her work here in Los Angles at the Shrif and Yas Art Studio, which she co-owns. Her art features bold color combinations, and soul-searching ideas and metaphors. The exhibit on display at UU Santa Monica will showcase her interpretation of her experiences with the poet Moulana Jalaledin Roumi. (This is the Persian spelling of the poet often referred to as ‘Rumi.’)

Of the Roumi series Moradi mentions, “While illustrating a self-portrait on a whim, a friend called me and asked me to create a piece for one of the great quotes from the renowned poet ‘Moulana Jalaledin Roumi.’ And so began this six month body of work called ‘Roumi’… I illustrated myself in different positions in every frame, it was like my inner ‘Roumi’ … In the end this series became a unique translation from ‘Roumi’ to my own language … and rebirth of the woman inside me.”

Yasman Moradi received her B.A and A.A. degree in Graphic Design & Fine Art in Tehran, while attending Sureh University and Culture & Science University. She has frequently exhibited her works in Iran and the United States. In conjunction with her art, she works as a children’s art teacher and visual merchandiser.

Michael Giliberti

Please join us for a stimulating exhibit featuring selected works of Michael Giliberti from 2012 to 2015. Come meet the artist! A Gala Artist Opening Reception for Michael Giliberti will be on Sunday, September 6, 2015 from 11am to 1pm in Forbes Hall. The show is free and open to the public and will run through Sunday, September 27th.

Michael Giliberti is a unique multi-dimensional artist who works in wide variety of mediums from acrylics and watercolors to crayons, oils, ink and silkscreen. His style ranges from abstract realism to traditional--depending upon the subject matter and his inspiration for each piece. His works are characterized by vivid color and powerful composition.

Giliberti often begins his artistic process by taking a series of photographs of his subject matter from different angles. A rough layout of the piece is then sketched in pencil, and later filled in by multiple layers of acrylics. Most paintings combine aspects of several different photos; the color and lighting are modified in the final result, but the photos are used to reference the subject matter’s texture and detail. Giliberti states, "I paint subjects that I hope people will identify with, maybe a place they’ve visited, a memory from their past, or possibly somewhere they’d like to go."

Michael Giliberti majored in Illustration at Parsons School of design in New York City. He studied printmaking at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, California. Prior to committing full time to his painting and printmaking, Giliberti enjoyed a successful career as a creative director in corporate advertising. His work is currently on exhibit in corporate and private collections in California, New York and abroad.

The show will run through Sunday, September 27th, and is free and open to the public on Sundays from 9am – 1pm and on weekdays by appointment. Follow the signs to free parking at the parking structure just south of Arizona and 16th. Handicapped parking is available behind the church. map

Joyce Lieberman: “Wall of Steals and Deals”
Please join us for a special exhibit featuring the work of Joyce Lieberman: “Wall of Steals and Deals.” UU Santa Monica’s Beverly Alison has persuaded Lieberman to bring many wonderful pieces at unprecedented low prices! Come meet the artist. A Gala Artist Opening Reception for Joyce Lieberman will be on Sunday, August 2, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Forbes Hall. The show will run through Sunday, August 30.

After receiving her BFA from the University of Michigan, Lieberman spent five years at the University of Texas at Austin where she taught art, exhibited art, and earned a Master’s Degree in Art. Lieberman came to Los Angeles in 1983, settled in Venice, and began working with designers and art consultants who placed her paintings and collages in hotels, corporate residences, and galleries throughout the country.

Lieberman’s art rapidly became well known. She often works with series of pieces. Her “UNStill Life” series features painted works on paper and canvas displaying flower-filled vases in luscious colors with colliding and overlapping patterns. For her Personal Archaeology series, she used collage to incorporate pattern, organization of shapes and color, and subtle references to correspondence. These works have been widely collected by many individuals and institutions including the University of Wisconsin, Merrill Lynch, Beverly Hills Hilton, and Blue Moon hotel in Miami. They have appeared in many Hollywood films.

She has been the solo exhibitionist in dozens of shows throughout the L.A. area, including ten solo shows at the iconic Seidman Gallery on Main Street. She continues to create new, intriguing pieces.

For this exhibit, Lieberman has created a salon style show of samples of her works from 1991 to the present. Works include florals, abstractions, and many other styles.

Mathilde Lombard - Number of Years

Please join us as we welcome multi-media artist Mathilde Lombard and come view Number of Years — her show of acrylic paintings. Lombard curated our Art Wall for 20 years and passed the job on to Beverly Alison about 20 years ago. We welcome back her fine art and friendship! A Gala Artist Opening Reception for Mathilde Lombard will be on Sunday, June 7, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., UU Santa Monica, Forbes Hall.

Mathilde Lombard has been curating art and creating her own works for many years. Much of the formal training Lombard received was at the Beverly Hills Adult School and from mentors, including Keith Finch. Lombard uses watercolor, ink, acrylic and other media to make striking and memorable images.

Lombard explains her passion, “I believe that each of us has creativity within expressed in many different ways. The question is whether or not one is moved to explore it. Visual art has been a major force in my life…I work intuitively, without preconceived notions and allow the painting to lead me. Truly, art is a never ending exploration — rich and exciting, frustrating and joyful!”

Lombard has been featured in many galleries in southern California and won a number of awards. She is a member of Women Painters West and the National Watercolor Society. From 1992 to 2006 she was represented by the Art Rental and Sales Gallery of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Her work has also appeared in a number of publications including “Faces” by Jack Selleck, “The Art of Collage” by Gerald Brommer, and “The Best of Watercolor, Volume 3, Selected by Serge Hollerbach and Betty Lou Schlemm.”

“A New Way of Thinking” by Vera Arutyunyan

Please help us give a warm welcome to our April artist Vera Arutyunyan, whose show, “A New Way of Thinking,” will grace our art wall with her highly personal Abstract Expressionist paintings. Artist Opening Reception: Sunday, March 29, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., Forbes Hall. The show will run through Sunday, April 26 and is open to the public on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on weekdays by appointment.

Vera Arutyunyan’s paintings showcase her brilliant use of texture and color through her signature style — painting with her fingers in order to “feel the colors directly.” She guides the viewer along a journey of spirituality and self-fulfillment by presenting her concepts without communicating her emotions — these are left up to the viewer. It is this interaction between artist and art seeker that truly makes Arutyunyan’s art special to behold.

Vera Arutyunyan immigrated to the United States from Armenia with $27 and a dream to become successful. Her early career led her to express her challenges and emotions as a new immigrant, “…to be understood, [to] obtain identity and significance, to become securely existent.” The results are deeply personal and moving abstract images.

Recently, Arutyunyan began painting to express her feelings of acceptance and her wide range of spiritual and personal beliefs. As an artist, she has taken a journey through her own heart and mind; at UU Santa Monica’s Art Wall, we invite you to see yourself in her paintings. Come meet and greet with her after the second service on March 29. She will be available to discuss her physical and spiritual journeys — her transitions, learning experiences, and sense of belonging to the communities that are a part of her world.

Contact Nancy Thompson at assistant@uusm.org, (310) 829-5436 ext. 102 for information or appointments to discuss how the church manages the Art Wall. Contact Beverly Alison for information about the artist or about exhibiting at UU Santa Monica.

Bonnie Lambert Returns to UU Santa Monica

Please help welcome Southern California visual artist Bonnie Lambert back for a return visit to our Art Wall. Artist Opening Reception for California Street Scenes, Sunday, March 1, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., UU Santa Monica, Forbes Hall.

California Street Scenes is an exhibit of her Expressionist style oil paintings, inspired by the aurora borealis sky-dances of her Wisconsin childhood. Lambert uses similar vibrant and contrasting colors to create engaging scenes from Hollywood, Long Beach, Pasadena, South Central, Burbank, and other near-by places.

After almost two decades of professional acting, Lambert moved to Los Angeles in 1989 and transitioned into visual arts. She took classes at the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena and studied with artists such as David Limrite, Ray Turner, and Mark Strickland. Chicana artist Margaret Garcia became her mentor and provided space for a solo show at the Garcia Studio. She has exhibited her work in over two dozen local venues.

According to Lambert: “The colossal scale of this city with its fluid light, contrasting landscapes, and passionate mix of cultures moved me to become a visual artist… I strive to capture an essence of Southern California — light, earth and people — mirrored by this transcendent city.”

The show will run through Sunday, March 22 and is open to the public on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on weekdays by appointment.

Sarah Hage
Sarah Hage brings her special vision of the world to our January Art Wall. Displaying a mixture of oil on canvas, pastel portraits, mixed media masks and sculptures, charcoals and acrylics, Hage presents her “functional and dysfunctional art [to] capture a sense of joy that casts some dark shadows, often with political undertones.”

Start the New Year right, meet Sarah at the Artist’s opening reception on Sunday, January 4, 2015 after the second service. The show will run through Sunday January 25.

Upon graduating from Boston College summa cum laude with a double major in English and History, Sarah Hage has spent over a decade creating art that is inspired by the natural world – often in unexpected ways. She states that her papier-mâché in particular, “evolves organically, and the process is as important as the end result. It is thrilling to create something from almost nothing…from flour, water, and newspaper…my patio is my studio, the LA Weekly my clay, the Southern California sun my kiln. Life doesn’t get any better than this.”

Sarah Hage began her artistic journey in Boston, but has been exhibiting under the warm sun of Los Angeles for the last four years. She plans to continue for many more years finding new ways to express herself on both the canvas and in the 3D world.
