Teri Tiemeyer-Garcia

Teri Tiemeyer-Garcia was born and raised in southern California and always wanted to be an artist. Her early influences were her parents, who liked to camp in the Sierras and to garden, and her grandmother Flo, who had a curious and childlike interest in birds, green growing things, and bits and pieces of "stuff" from nature.

Ambika Talwar

Artist’s statement:

"A self-taught artist, I began to paint about 15 years ago to channel my hopes, loves, desires, fears, angers -- my bottled emotions -- into a new form. A particular emotion or idea evoked in my mind an image or a series of images. I would then transfer it to canvas, attempting to remain as true to the image as possible.

Working Women of Zimbabwe

This December, we are very pleased to welcome the Zimbabwe Artists Project, (ZAP), as they present the exhibition “Working Women of Zimbabwe.” The Zimbabwe Artists Project is a nonprofit organization partnering with women in Zimbabwe, buying artwork and supporting self-enterprise. ZAP buys artwork directly, and finds a market for it in the US, providing a stable and consistent income for the artists.

We look forward to seeing you at the Opening Reception on Sunday, December 6 from 12:00 noon – 1:30pm.

Each colorful, unique piece of artwork shares a personal story from the artist in her own words - a folktale, local words/themes of wisdom and more. Embroideries, fabric paintings, and paintings on wooden boards offer a connection to a woman a world away. The artists featured in ZAP are subsistence farmers, mothers, and householders as well as artists. Most women live on their own, providing for families. Some are widowed, others are single heads of households. Women’s income from agriculture is unpredictable and limited. Sales of art help women afford food, clothing, school fees, medicines, transport, seeds and fertilizer.

Come out and support this important organization! The Zimbabwe Artists Project purchases more art locally than any other buyer, delivering cash at the time of purchase. ZAP also provides health care assistance to the artists, covering the immediate costs of urgent health care needs, and maintains an educational assistance program providing school fees for children in the area who are orphaned. ZAP celebrates the artistry and accomplishments of these talented women, and supports their efforts to become economically self-sufficient.

February Art Wall: Gillian Renault – Looking Beyond One’s Self

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Santa Monica, CA, Feb. 1, 2019 — The February Art Wall will feature some of artist Gillian Renault’s most priceless work with an opening reception on Sunday, February 3 from 12 pm to 1:30 pm in Forbes immediately after the UU Santa Monica services.

A featured piece entitled “Cover to Cover” tells the story of Renault father’s life, the highs and lows as she puts it in an email. Letting go of any of this art would be like cutting a chapter out of a novel or cutting years out of her own life.

“I want the work to inspire people to contemplate their own relationships with parents or elders whom they [may] have lost through death or for other reasons,” Renault said, “That’s why I show it. I hope people leave the show changed even if just a little.”

“Cover to Cover” chronicles the life of Renault’s father and is designed to encourage viewers to contemplate the strengths and flaws of the lives of their parents and elders, how their lives were shaped by them in order to understand how they carry them in their psyches forever.

Renault’s work was featured in Atlanta, Georgia by Universalist Unitarian’s First Existentialist congregation, Mercer University and Richards Gallery at Georgia Tech University. Another similar work featuring her maternal relationship was first premiered in Atlanta, 2002.

Born on the island of Jersey, Renault is a self-taught artist who has lived in the United States since the 70s. In 2012, with 25 years of media experience she pivoted professionally and completed a two-year Chaplaincy Program at the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe. She then was ordained as a Buddhist lay minister and now a hospice chaplain.

To view this month’s installment after the February 3 reception contact Nancy Thompson at assistant@uusm.org or dial 310-829-5436 x102. Accessible parking is available behind the church. Artist life pieces not for sale

Children’s RE to Host May 2019 Art Wall Exhibit Reception on May 5, Noon, Forbes.

Children’s RE to Host this Month’s Art Wall Exhibit

SANTA MONICA - This Sunday’s Art Wall opening reception, Kathleen Hogue, Director of Religious Explorations, members and friends will gather at Forbes Hall after both services to celebrate yet another way for children to experience and learn from the community about the value of art, for one of Hogue’s final projects before her departure.

The collection reminds the viewer of the connections to one another, home on earth and what completes so-called life.

Teri Lucas, Assistant to DRE, said the kid’s work is one of the best in years since the art wall started featuring work by kids, “It’s not often our hard-working art director takes breaks from her rigorous curation all year-round.”

The art pieces are one of a kind, generational contribution to the church and represent the devotion to kids in a knit-tight community, and proceeds will benefit the RE Assistant fund to support the program that at the moment is lacking funds.

The art wall will feature collaborations and sculptures by the young artist throughout the program, decorating the hall of pleasant spring tones, as a little reminder of the fragile environment they will inherit.

The art wall for the month of May features works created individually and collaboratively by UU Santa Monica children, youth, teachers, parents, and staff that will begin promptly at noon, after Reverend Greg Ward’s “Enthousiasmos” sermon, Sunday, May 5.

Reverend Greg Ward at UU Santa Monica said there are a lot of exciting new things happening to the church, as and thanked the Kathleen, Teri Lucas, and the kids for their contribution to the art wall this month.
