Larry Barber - Signs of Life: Images of Our World

Photographer Larry Barber has spent the last eight years traveling the world and taking photographs of some of the most beautiful and poignant natural wonders on earth. Come and witness the renewing power of gazing at the beauty of nature as Barber displays 20+ of his best works.

Barber graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Journalism in 1961 and began his career as a reporter and cameraman. He learned to focus on the essential elements of telling a story. After graduating from film school at UCLA, Barber decided to change direction and focus on issues of the spirit, which eventually led him to a ministerial degree from United Church of Religious Science. From 1979 to 2008, Barber served as senior minister in La Crescenta; as associate editor of “Science of Mind” magazine; and as associate minister of Founder’s Center for Spiritual Living in Los Angeles.

Barber’s initial interest in the power of the natural world occurred in February 1973, when he appeared at a Santa Monica City Council Meeting to defend the Santa Monica Pier, which was slated for destruction. Barber argued that the primary value of the pier was as a venue where human beings could refresh their inner selves by regular contact with sunlight, sky, and ocean. A photo from this famous meeting, which took Barber along a path that led him to photography, will be displayed at the show.

Katherine Genikov

This April, we are pleased to exhibit works by Katherine Genikov. We look forward to seeing you at the Opening Reception on Sunday, April 3 from 12:00 noon – 1:30pm. The exhibit will run through the month of April.

Katherine Genikov is a Russian-American artist who paints with oils and paints with music, sounds, performance art, and time-based art forms. She says her “… process is multilayered, beginning with music compositions that are then developed into paintings and drawing, created in trance like states.” This combination of creating visual art through a trance-like state induced by auditory sounds, allows her to create images that are striking and memorable.

Katherine Genikov currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She has presented her works at many California galleries and shows, including Human Resources, (Los Angeles); The LAB, (San Francisco); and Blackstone Gallery (Los Angeles). She holds a BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute.

Connections Through Art – Ethiopian Art, curated by Elsabet Mesfin

During March, we are pleased to exhibit Connections Through Art, a collection of Ethiopian paintings, curated by Elsabet Mesfin. We look forward to seeing you at the Opening Reception on Sunday, March 6 from 12 noon to 1:30 pm. The exhibit will run through the month of March.

Elsabet Mesfin was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and now resides in Los Angeles. In 2011, Mesfin returned to Ethiopia to reconnect with family and friends. The journey became transformative as she discovered a rich source of Ethiopian creative expression in the paintings of university art students and local artists. These works were so inspirational for her that she became committed to creating international exposure for these talented artists. Mesfin returned to Los Angeles, with a number of original paintings to showcase here in the States. A portion of all sales go directly to the artists.

Elsabet Mesfin created Connections Through Art to help further promote Ethiopian artists. The March art wall exhibit expresses the lifestyle and natural beauty of Ethiopia. The images show both traditional and modern scenes. Artistically, several different styles of composition are represented including Realism, Impressionism, Cubism, Portraiture and Abstract Modernism.

The works of eight different artists are displayed in the show: Yohannes Bayu, Haile Gabriel, Samuel Hailu, Aman G. Medhin, Berhanu Misganaw, Nahosenay Negussie, Negatu Solomon and Tesfa Solomon. Individual biographies of each artist can be read on www.ConnectionsThroughArt. com.

Most of them have studied at the Alle School of Arts at the University of Addis Ababa, and many come from families who have a long tradition of artistic expression.

Renee Amitai: Paintings, Etchings, Sculptures

We are pleased to welcome to our Art Wall internationally renowned artist Renee Amitai and her exhibition, “Renee Amitai: Paintings, Etchings, Sculptures.”

Amitai is a seasoned artist trained in many disciplines including painting, sculpture, architecture, and printmaking. She began at École des Beaux Arts in Paris, France; she went on to gain professional experience in fi ne art and architecture in France, Israel, and Italy before moving to the United States in 1984. We look forward to seeing you at the opening reception on Sunday, February 7 from 12 noon to 1:30 pm. The exhibit will run through the month of February.

Much of Amitai’s current artistic infl uence has to do with a focus on the inner, core self accessed by spiritual and literal ways through eyes. Of her artistic infl uences Amitai relates, “Because I trained as an architect, my paintings evolve from geometric abstraction in bold and strong colors to abstract architectonic fi gurations reinforcing The Square, window to the soul.” Amitai further explains her career as follows: “My artistic interest has evolved through the years from printmaking to paintings, back and forth, making my living through my art, in design and architecture. My images went from symbolism to abstract metaphysic landscapes to structural shapes. My paintings are my spiritual odyssey, a search for mystical meanings, translated by light breaking through a slit, a door, a window, an eye.”

Since the mid-1990's, Renee Amitai has exhibited her works all over the world, including France, China, Japan, Korea, the United States, Germany, Russia, and many others. State-side, Renee Amitai is affi liated with the Los Angeles Printmaking Society; in Paris she is part of the association Les Seize Anges and Gallerie Gavart, as well as Gallerie Mu and Les Artistes Independents du Grand Palais Gallerie. Always exploring and always creating, Renee Amitai looks forward to further adventures into her artistic soul, and to reaching out to others.

Zimbabwe Artists Project (ZAP) - "Working Women of Zimbabwe"
This December, we are very pleased to welcome the Zimbabwe Artists Project, (ZAP), as they present the exhibition “Working Women of Zimbabwe.” The Zimbabwe Artists Project is a nonprofit organization partnering with women in Zimbabwe, buying artwork and supporting self-enterprise.

ZAP buys artwork directly, and finds a market for it in the U.S., providing a stable and consistent income for the artists. We look forward to seeing you at the Opening Reception on Sunday, December 6 from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm.

Each colorful, unique piece of artwork shares a personal story from the artist in her own words — a folktale, local words/themes of wisdom and more. Embroideries, fabric paintings, and paintings on wooden boards offer a connection to a woman a world away.

The artists featured in ZAP are subsistence farmers, mothers, and householders, as well as artists. Most women live on their own, providing for families. Some are widowed, others are single heads of households. Women’s income from agriculture is unpredictable and limited. Sales of art help women afford food, clothing, school fees, medicines, transport, seeds, and fertilizer.

Come out and support this important organization! The Zimbabwe Artists Project purchases more art locally than any other buyer, delivering cash at the time of purchase. ZAP also provides health care assistance to the artists, covering the immediate costs of urgent health care needs, and maintains an educational assistance program providing school fees for children in the area who are orphaned. ZAP celebrates the artistry and  accomplishments of these talented women, and supports their efforts to become economically selfsufficient.

Contact Nancy for more information or weekday appointments at assistant@uusm.org or (310) 829-5436. Contact Beverly at balison@aol.com, for further information about the artist or about exhibiting on the Art Wall at UU Santa Monica.
