Service Notes

As you may know, as of July 1 the congregation has approved an increase to the community gift we make
each Sunday to an organization outside the church. This has been 50%, and will now increase to 60%. For
the week of July 6th, 60% of the non-pledge offering will go to CLUE-LA, (Clergy and Laity United for
Economic Justice). CLUE-LA was founded in 1996 to bring together clergy and lay leaders of all faiths to
join low-wage workers in their struggles for justice.

Rev. Jim Conn is the founding minister of the Church in Ocean Park. He also helped found the Clergy and
Laity United for Economic Justice, Los Angeles (CLUE-LA) as well as the Santa Monica renter’s rights
campaign. Rev. Conn is also affiliated with Capital & Main as a writer and the Asset Based Community
Development Institute.

Layered background vocals coupled with textured melodies make up the Ohannon sound. The band
focuses on creating mood through vocalization while delivering a message that is identifiable and positive
for its listeners. The music can be described as a hodgepodge of sounds and genres- influenced greatly by
Old Soul and Folk music. Ohannon’s band has performed throughout the Los Angeles area promoting
the recently released EP, “Art Over Accolade”. Many of the EP’s songs center around some form of faith,
and the doubt and struggle that accompanies the human experience. The EP has been featured on many
blogs and websites, one of which describes Ohannon as, “one of the most talented individuals many of us
have never heard”. With the release of “Art Over Accolade”, Ohannon hopes that the listener will take the
time to feel and enjoy, and really “listen”.

Angeles and is committed to helping everyone know their HIV status and making sure that people living with

Welcome to our guest musician this morning, Debra Penberthy. Debra is a wonderful local singer-songwriter
who has been involved in social justice and activating human potential her entire career. She has been
performing and writing since the mid-90s, and is now putting her work out on a wider scale—recording her first
professional EP, which includes "Half the Sky," written as a theme song for the Half the Sky Movement
(www.halftheskymovement.org). There will be an event to help fund the EP on July 17th at 8:00pm at Throop
Memorial Church. The event will include performances by Ty Fance, Nicole Starrett, Debra, and others. There is
a $10 suggested donation or $15 to reserve a copy of the EP. More info and music at www.debrapenberthy.com
and soundcloud.com/debra-penberthy.

Also, a big welcome back to Michael Antaramian, who is filling in this morning for Daniel Gledhill, while he is
away on vacation.

This morning's flowers are dedicated to Annaliva Martin-Straw and Sophia Martin-Straw by their very
proud mother. Annalivia has graduated from 8th grade, and Sophia has graduated from 5th grade, and
they will be moving up to high school and middle school in September. I celebrate your successes, and I
love you more than words can ever say.

Our guest musician this morning, Gertrude Bradley, is a lyrico-spinto soprano with an extensive
background in the performance of opera (particularly Puccini), musical theater, art song, and spirituals.
She has appeared in concerts in premiere venues throughout The United States, Taiwan, Spain, Israel,
Switzerland, Germany, and elsewhere. She is a featured soloist at Crenshaw Christian Center in Los
Angeles, has sung numerous recitals for African Americans for Los Angeles Opera, and is a former
member of the world-renowned Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers.

This month, 50% of the non-pledge offering will go to Common Ground: The Westside HIV Community
Center. Now housed within the Venice Family Clinic, Common Ground is the only HIV agency on the
Westside of Los Angeles and is committed to helping everyone know their HIV status and making sure that people living with the virus find - and stay connected to - medical care.

We would be one, as now we join in singing

Our hymn of love, to pledge ourselves anew

To that high cause of greater understanding

Of who we are, and what in us is true.
