as their Developmental Minister. She has been a religious professional for twenty-four years; she
began as a DRE in Washington State, worked as a Hospital/Hospice Chaplain for two years and served
as a Student/Consulting Minister for both the Anaheim UU Church and the Sepulveda UU Society. She
has preached in over three dozen UU congregations.
We are grateful to have with us this morning, SpíríTríō. SpíríTríō is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the
preservation and performance of the Negro Spiritual as musical art. They also deliver skill to
contemporary Gospel, and poise to classical opera. This dynamic group formed by artistic director,
Gertrude Bradley, was inspired by the music of opera great, Florence Quivar. Each singer is uniquely
gifted and skillful. All have performed in concerts locally and internationally with prestigious credits
and accomplishments too numerous to list. The name, SpíríTríō is derived from the words “spirit” or
Godly, “Spirituals” the inspiration, and “trio” three singing as one.

Thank you to Dan Patterson for chalking our Summer Solstice Labyrinth in the courtyard. Walking the
labyrinth puts contemporary people in touch with a ritual that dates back thousands of years. It's an
ancient spiritual pathway used for meditation, relaxation and insight. Many versions of the pathway
have appeared in diverse cultures across the globe from Crete to native America. This labyrinth
pattern is similar to the Labyrinth pattern on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France, circa 1220.
Today, we invite you to walk the labyrinth slowly and mindfully, in three stages:
1. Moving towards the center, gently release cares and concerns you are carrying with you today.
2. In the center, pause to be present in the moment for three deep breaths in and out. You may also
want to listen to the world around you during this time.
3. On the way out, you may experience a shift in your cares and concerns.
Thank you to the Labyrinth Project of the UU Church of Arlington, VA, for this labyrinth meditation.

That's why we're waiting, waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting, waiting on the world to change

He has been a parish minister since 1967 and is the author of two dozen books on personal
relationships and spiritual growth. Tom and his life-partner, The Rev. Dr. Carolyn Sheets
Owen-Towle, are the active parents of four children and seven grandchildren. Tom is a guitarist and
parlor magician, who currently sings with seniors, mentors children and youth-at-risk, and volunteers

Art of Finishing Life Well.
Ned Durrett is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist from South Carolina that grew up watching his mother
minister to congregations all over the Southeast. His southern roots can be found in his preacher’s
tongue and garage-party swagger, but it's the honest emotion pouring from every song that makes
every person he meets family and every place he plays home. More information about Ned Durrett
and his band, Ned and the Dirt, can be found at www.nedandthedirt.com. Please stop by the music
table in Forbes Hall after the service to take a look at Ned and the Dirt’s brand new EP and other

from youth into adulthood.
Circle Game
Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like when you're older must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
Chorus: And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game *
Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him take your time it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
Repeat Chorus
So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through
Repeat Chorus
...And go round and round and round
In the circle game

*Gathering Hymn ‘Tis a gift to be simple, ‘tis a gift to be free
‘Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be
And when we find ourselves in the place just right
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
to bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed
To turn, turn will be our delight
‘Till by turning, turning we come ‘round right.

Musical Response You’ve Got a Friend Carole King
When you're down and troubled,
And you need some love and care,
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me,
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night.
If the sky above you grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together and call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door
Now, ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold?
They'll hurt you, yes, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them,
Oh, but don't you let them
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

Today we send 60% of our offering to the Unitarian Universalist Association – UU Service Committee Nepal
Earthquake Relief Fund. On April 25, communities in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh suffered a devastating
7.8 magnitude earthquake. So far, reports reveal that more than 4,000 people have died and thousands
more are injured or missing. The UUA-UUSC response will focus on those who are often left out of
traditional emergency relief efforts, such as people living in remote areas; women and children; lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender people; people who do not have recognized citizenship; indigenous people;
Dalits; elderly people; and people living with disabilities and HIV/AIDS.

Service Notes
Welcome back to Rev. Rick Hoyt-McDaniels and thank you to the Chalice Choir from First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles for joining with our choir at the 11am service, today. To complete our choral exchange, our choir will join the Chalice Choir at First Church for their worship service at 11am next Sunday, May 15.
Today, 60% of our non-pledge offering will go to the Unitarian Universalist Association. In our covenant as member congregations of the UUA, it is written that we pledge one another our mutual trust and support. This church’s support for the UUA through this offering, as well as through contributing 89% of our Fair Share contribution in our 2015-16 budget, enables us to embody our pledge of trust and support. Among many other expressions of our faith in the world, the UUA supports Standing on the Side of Love, the Our Whole Lives sexuality education curricula, and Tapestry of Faith religious education resources. This year’s UUA General Assembly is June 22-26 in Columbus, Ohio. Are you interested in attending and representing our congregation as a delegate at the largest annual gathering of UUs in the world? Please contact the church office for more information at office@uusm.org.
