Sung Response When I Am Frightened
When I am troubled, will you listen to me?
When I am lonely, will you be my friend?
Will you be there for me, comfort me tenderly?
Will you share some of your feelings with me?
If you will show me commitment,
Then I may learn to love as you do,
Then I may learn to love.
Responsive Reading Pilgrimage Richard Rohr
Pilgrimage happens when you’re not moving.
You learn when you’re unlearning.
Revelation comes in gulps that leave you gasping,
But sometimes it seems to come in the slow accumulation of small
insights that you hardly know have happened,
In chance encounters and odd surprises,
In little glimpses of what you did not go to see and did not know
was there.

Gathered here in the mystery of the hour
Gathered here in one strong body

Prelude Raindrop Prelude Frederick Chopin
Welcome
Chalice Lighting (Responsive) We Light This Flame William Feiss
We light this flame as our fervent plea
to brighten the dark corners of our hearts;
We hold this flame
For in it is the promise of warmth
for souls grown cold in loss and despair;
We kindle this light
That we might continue to find comfort in its warmth;
strength in its light; holiness in its presence;
We follow this light
That it might illuminate our search for purpose, for meaning,
And forgiveness;
We light this chalice
Knowing even as a sacred spark of life is extinguished,
in the ensuing darkness, its light will still burn bright
with all the memory and hope of its all too brief flash across our lives.
We light this flame of life, of love and truth
for the divine promise of healing hearts.

Order of Service, Sun, April 23, 2017 - "Earth Sunday"
April 23, 2017 Earth Sunday
There is science now to construct the story of the journey we have made on this earth,
the story that connects us with all beings. Right now on our planet we need to remember that story —
to harvest it and taste it. For we are in a hard time, a fearful time.
And it is the knowledge of the bigger story that is going to carry us through.

Today 40% of our non-pledge offering will go to Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services. With locations in Culver City and throughout Los Angeles, Didi Hirsch transforms lives by providing quality mental health care and substance abuse disorder services in communities where stigma or poverty limit access.
Two weeks ago, we launched the Undy Sunday Challenge. Your response, including a generous individual who donated over 240 pairs of socks and 90 undies, has been tremendous - thank you! So far we have collected 296 pairs of undies and 349 pairs of socks, bringing us about halfway to our goal of 600 of each, (the equivalent of 100 6-packs, not 100 pairs as we wrote incorrectly last week). Help us reach our goal by bringing a donation to the collection box during coffee hour, or by ordering online for delivery to: Didi Hirsch - Excelsior House, 1007 Myrtle Ave., Inglewood, CA 90301. All donations received, (or ordered, if you let us know that you have done so), by April 30 will be included in our total.

On March 17, 2017, after a decade of effort, we were formally recognized as a UUA Accredited Green Sanctuary! The Green Sanctuary Program provides a path for congregational study, reflection, and action for today's environmental challenges - including climate change and environmental justice. Green Sanctuary Congregations demonstrate a commitment to examining their current environmental impact, and moving towards developing sustainable practices grounded in Unitarian Universalism in four focus areas:
1. Environmental Justice acknowledges that marginalized communities are often hit first and
hardest by environmental crisis. In partnering with these communities we are able to address
human and environmental needs at the same time. Environmental Justice emphasizes a shift
from providing charity to working in solidarity with the communities most affected by climate change.
2. Worship and Celebration is the heart of Unitarian Universalism. As we work together towards a
cleaner, more just and sustainable world, worship enables us to stay connected to each other
and to celebrate the work we have accomplished.
3. Religious Education shapes more than just minds. It shapes attitudes and practices.
4. Sustainable Living requires us to treat the world more gently by using fewer resources and being

Service Notes
This morning we are happy to welcome guest musician Roy Zimmerman. After over twenty years and
twelve albums, Zimmerman has been influential in bringing, “the sting of satire to the struggle for
Peace and Social Justice.” Zimmerman’s music has been featured on HBO and Showtime, and he is a
regular blogger at the Huffington Post. More information can be found at www.RoyZimmerman.com .
Today’s Community Offering will go to the UU Service Committee to advance human rights and
social justice in the United States and around the world. The work of the UU Service Committee is
built on the conviction that all people are entitled to basic human rights, which transcend divisions of
class, race, nationality, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, and gender. We envision a world free
from oppression and injustice, where all can realize their full human rights.

Service Notes
At each of our five services today, we will collect money for our Ministerial Discretionary Fund. This fund is so that we will have some way of providing care for our fellow members and friends who find themselves without enough food or who can’t pay a bill … for those who’ve been unexpectedly laid off or who need just a little help with a prescription or receiving treatment - but, are uncomfortable asking. There is currently no active fund or line item in our budget that allows us offer the spirit of care to our fellow members in need. This fund allows us to be difference makers in the lives of our fellow members. Please give what you can to help out those struggling in our larger community. Thank you!
