Service Notes

This month, 60% of our offering will go to the the Unitarian Universalist Association . As one of
over 1,000 UU congregations in the United States and around the world, UU Santa Monica pledges our
mutual trust and support to all other UU congregations. Our support for the UUA through our shared
offering, as well as our congregation’s annual gift of $15,000 toward our Fair Share contribution,
allows UU congregations to transform their communities, enables religious leaders to innovate and
inspire, and amplifies our collective voice to bring more justice and more love to a world so in need of
our healing message. We give to support congregations other than our own because investing in and
strengthening the presence of Unitarian Universalism is a concrete expression of our
interconnectedness.

Calling all UUs: Join leaders, volunteers, and the UU Santa Monica YRUU Youth
Group and advisors at the largest annual gathering of UUs in the country at General Assembly in Portland,
OR, June 24-28 by registering at www.uua.org/ga or speaking with Congregation President Patricia Wright.

Service Notes

Today, 40% of our offering will go to to St. John’s Well Child and Family Center. St. John’s Well Child and Family Center serves nearly 100,000 low-income patients in the Los Angeles area.  Because funding for low-income community health centers is constantly under attack, 27 million Americans are unsure of when, where or whether they will get health care. The Well Child and Family Center offers services and programs for low-income children, women, homeless, and transgender patients. Since the division between the rich and poor is larger than it's ever been, funding community health centers has become a political issue. But the public, and St. John’s, believes it is a human issue. Partnering with local agencies offering health services to those with greatest need is a moral issue. We invite you to make a difference. Please give what you can to help out those struggling in our larger community. Thank you!

Today, 40% of our offering will go to to The Equal Justice Initiative. Despite the motto of ‘and
justice for all…’ people of color face have very different experiences with the law enforcement,
judicial and economic systems in place in our country. As a people, we’ve done little to
acknowledge the impact of generations of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation. The Equal
Justice Initiative seeks ways to restore humanity in the face of prejudicial inequality. Please give
generously. Thank you!

Grief is a natural reaction after the death of someone close. Yet in our society few people are prepared
for the intensity and duration of the grief process. Our House Grief Support Center was founded on
the premise that grievers need understanding, support, and connection. If you or someone you care
about is grieving, Our House is here to help. For support: 1.888.417.1444. www.ourhouse-grief.org.

A few thoughts about Luigi Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor

Music set for the occasion of loss, requiems being principal among them, usually fit into three distinct
categories, in my view. There are the dark and mournful settings, such as in the famous requiems by
Brahms and Mozart. There are the light and celestial settings, such as in the requiem by Durufle and
in Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna . And, there are the flashy fanfare settings, meant to be honorable and show
esteem, such as in Verdi’s requiem setting. In Cherubini’s rather characteristic setting, we clearly see
the transition from the reverent, though playful early classical composers like Mozart into the bolder
and more charismatic sounds of early romantic composers like Brahms. In this way, he was much like
his contemporary colleague and frenemy, Beethoven.

Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor is actually the first of two settings he wrote. It was composed to
commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the beheading of Louis XVI of France in the French Revolution.
It was later censored by the archbishop of Paris for its use of female voices, prompting Cherubini to
write a second requiem in D minor for men only.

We hope you enjoy this rarely performed work and that it can be meaningful to you and your loved ones
in this time of loss.

For the remainder of November, 40% of our offerings will benefit the Guest at Your Table (GAYT) project. GAYT is the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee’s annual intergenerational program to raise support and awareness for world wide human rights. UUSC works in over 25 countries, with over 75 grassroots partners. This year’s theme is ‘Small Change is Big Change’ and it is our opportunity to invite someone from another country without food or water or education to sit at our table. We learn about them and they learn about us. Please take opportunities to start these conversations with your children or other family members about ‘who is our neighbor?' in different parts of the world.

Today, 40% of our offering will go to to The Guest At Your Table Program of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. They help us partner with 75 agencies in 24 countries advancing human rights. This week we partner with Ursula Rakova and the peoples of the Cateret Islands in Papua New Guinea who are among the first peoples displaced from native lands due to the effects of climate change. It’s a living example of how 3rd world people are suffering from 1st world choices. Your generosity directly advances love and justice on a global scale. Thank you!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s R equiem K. 626

The ancient liturgy of the Roman Requiem Mass deepens the solemnity and grace of our Vespers service, as we turn toward that which is sacred in remembrance of those who have passed from this life to the next.

Considered one of the great works of Classical music, the R equiem Mass in D minor K. 626 by W. A. Mozart was left largely unfinished at the composer's death in 1791. Franz Xaver Süssmayr, Mozart’s copyist, is credited with the work’s completion. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Süssmayr version has become the most widely accepted.

Mozart composed over 600 works, including many which today are acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most esteemed and beloved of classical composers, and his influence on subsequent Western music is profound.

A Litany for Survival
     ~ Audre Lorde

For those of us who live at the shoreline
standing upon the constant edges of decision
crucial and alone
for those of us who cannot indulge
            the passing dreams of choice
who live in doorways coming and going
in the hours between dawns
             looking inward and outward
             at once before and after
seeking a now that can breed
futures
like bread in our children's mouths
so their dreams will not reflect
                the death of ours:
For those of us
who were imprinted with fear
like a faint line in the center of our foreheads
learning to be afraid with our mother's milk
                 for by this weapon
this illusion of some safety to be found
the heavy-footed hoped to silence us
For all of us
this instant and this triumph
We were never meant to survive.
And when the sun rises we are afraid
it might not remain
when the sun sets we are afraid
it might not rise in the morning
when our stomachs are full we are afraid
of indigestion
when our stomachs are empty we are afraid
                    we may never eat again
when we are loved we are afraid
love will vanish
when we are alone we are afraid
                      love will never return
and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
                      but when we are silent
                      we are still afraid
So it is better to speak
remembering
we were never meant to survive.
                                                                                                            ~ (Responsive Reading, October 15, 2017)

Pastoral Prayer from the Hebrew Scriptures
A message from The Teacher, (Ecclesiastes 3:1-11)

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
I have seen the burden laid on the human race. Everything is made beautiful in its time.

                                                                                                                      ~ (Pastoral Prayer, October 15, 2017)
