New Lending Library is Open for Business

The Robert V. Stern Memorial Library is up and running, located on the south wall of Forbes Hall to the right of the TV. The library is named for a member who was married to Carol Edwards, our former minister of religious education.

The lending library will be open on Sundays during the two coffee hours. There will be a special area for our Book Club selections.

Book donations for the Robert V. Stern Memorial Library will be accepted under the following guidelines:

Town Hall Meeting on Building Plans

At a town hall meeting on Sunday, July 30, at 11:30 a.m., the Building Committee will present the latest word on our building plans. By then we anticipate that the revised plans for our application to the Santa Monica Planning Commission will be ready for congregational review.

Are We a "Church," a "Community," or Both?

Shall we change our name again? This is a proposal that we become the Unitarian Universalist Community of Santa Monica.

We have changed our name twice before. Our original name was All Souls Unitarian Church of Santa Monica. In 1951 we changed it to Unitarian Community Church of Santa Monica. We still have that name above our door. In 1961 the Unitarians and Universalists merged, but we waited until 1995 to become the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica.

Pat GomezPat Gomez has agreed to chair the Membership and Leadership (M&L) Committee. Pat brings a strong background in program development and coordination to the position. Building Committee Provides Building Options Overview

The recent purchase of the property at 1248 18th Street, adjacent to the existing sanctuary, has opened up new and exciting possibilities for expanding and upgrading our facilities. Unfortunately, at a cost of $1.265 million, it has also absorbed most of the capital improvement fund which had been built up to begin construction of new religious education classrooms on the 17th Street lot, to expand the sanctuary, and to make access and code-related improvements to Forbes Hall.

Meetings on Sunday afternoons are tough, especially, it seems, when they are held on a warm Southern California spring day. That was certainly evident at our 78th Annual Congregational Meeting, which started late because a quorum of members had not arrived even 10 minutes after the 12:30 p.m. meeting start time.

Transition Committee is getting in gear — are you?

There are three important messages from the Transition Committee this month:

1. The Blue House appears to be on schedule, with completion in July.

2. There are some new chairs in Forbes Hall for your examination. Please sit on them. Decide which ones should replace some of the pews in the Sanctuary. We need the ability to stack and store seating so that we have a semisocial hall for the next couple of years.
