Today, 40% of our offering will go to to UCLA Cancer Center, to support those who are learning to live with - and beyond - cancer. Those who face these challenges often feel frightened and alone but, with help, often find a special courage and wisdom to inspire those around them. Please give what you can to bring more courage and wisdom into our world. Thank you!

“Caro Mio Ben” (My Sweet Beloved)
My Sweet Beloved,
Believe me on this:
Without you,
My heart languishes

I, your faithful one,
Can’t catch my breath!
Cease, cruel one,
So much torment!

“Amor Vittorioso” (Victorious Love)
Come ye all armed,
O my strong soldiers, Fa, la, la
I am unconquered love,
The sure archer.
Fear not at all,
But in fine ranks united
Follow me courageously, Fa, la, la

They seem great heroes,
Those who are against you. Fa, La, la
But before them who know how to strike
They cannot defend themselves.
Fear not at all
But courageous and strong,
Be lively and fight. Fa, la, la

Sunday September 3, 2017                                                                                  Making Room at the Table

This is a modern dance with real animals. It’s supposed to symbolize peaceful coexistence
but it’s usually pretty loud and the dancers have to watch where they step all the time.
I heard someone say they didn’t know peace was so smelly.

About Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: African British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, (August 15, 1875- September 1, 1912), was affectionately referred to in his time as the African “Mahler.” His most popular work, "Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast" for soli, chorus and orchestra, is a shining example of his command of musical form, texture, harmony, and orchestration, which resulted in overnight fame and respect among colleagues that few men of color could have hoped to enjoy in the early twentieth century. Because of his incredible success in a field dominated by white males at a time when racism in America was peaking, Coleridge-Taylor’s influence on African American artists and intellectuals was powerful and far-reaching. Today, in remembrance of the 105th anniversary of his
death, we honor the legacy of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor with a selection of his music.

Questions to Ponder

1) Think of a time when you tried to make room at a table for yourself. If you were silenced or felt isolated, what were the circumstances. If you had a seat but no voice, what were the circumstances? Did things change? How?

2) Think of a time when you invited others to sit at a table where you had a place. What was done to make the newcomers welcome and comfortable? How did things change? What did you learn about yourself? …from those who had been invited?

Gabriella Rosco organizes in Santa Monica for CLUE-LA , (Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice). The Santa Monica CLUE Committee stands with women and men in various industries that routinely dehumanize, marginalize and disrespect their workers. In Santa Monica, there are three active campaigns: with hotel workers, iron workers and carwash workers, (or Carwasheros). A bar has been raised in Santa Monica in terms of living wages, safe working conditions and respect on the job. When situations look bleak and impossible, the faith community rallies with workers. They stand united, and work to build a more just and sacred society. Gabriella feels blessed to be a part of this movement with CLUE and the Santa Monica CLUE Committee.
