Bart Campolo is a secular minister, speaker, and writer who currently volunteers as the Humanist
Chaplain at the University of Southern California (USC). Born and raised in suburban Philadelphia,
Bart became an evangelical Christian as a teenager and was immediately attracted to urban ministry.
As he became an influential evangelical leader, however, Bart increasingly questioned his own faith.
In 2005 he returned to street-level community building in inner-city Cincinnati, where he eventually
completed his gradual transition from Christianity to secular humanism. Since moving to Los
Angeles, Bart’s work has been focused on inspiring and equipping people to make the most of their
lives by actively pursuing loving relationships, social justice and a genuine sense of wonder.

Thank you to our guest musician this morning, singer-songwriter and actress Liz Eldridge. She
graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BA in Writing Seminars and Theatre Arts & Studies.
These days Liz sings the blues at venues such as the Gardenia, Cafe Metropol, and the Santa Monica
Bar & Grill, and also performs with her band, Many Distant Cities. Liz grew up in Los Angeles with a
series of great dogs.

Thank you to Dan Patterson for chalking our Summer Solstice Labyrinth in the courtyard. Walking the
labyrinth puts contemporary people in touch with a ritual that dates back thousands of years. It's an
ancient spiritual pathway used for meditation, relaxation and insight. Many versions of the pathway
have appeared in diverse cultures across the globe from Crete to native America. This labyrinth
pattern is similar to the Labyrinth pattern on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France, circa 1220.
Today, we invite you to walk the labyrinth slowly and mindfully, in three stages:

          1. Moving towards the center, gently release cares and concerns you are carrying with you today.
          2. In the center, pause to be present in the moment for three deep breaths in and out. You may also
want to listen to the world around you during this time.
          3. On the way out, you may experience a shift in your cares and concerns.

Thank you to the Labyrinth Project of the UU Church of Arlington, VA, for this labyrinth meditation.

Reproductive freedom is the bedrock of women’s freedom.
And a society of free women is the only kind in which there can be true justice.

We are grateful to have with us this morning, SpíríTríō. SpíríTríō is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the
preservation and performance of the Negro Spiritual as musical art. They also deliver skill to
contemporary Gospel, and poise to classical opera. This dynamic group formed by artistic director,
Gertrude Bradley, was inspired by the music of opera great, Florence Quivar. Each singer is uniquely
gifted and skillful. All have performed in concerts locally and internationally with prestigious credits
and accomplishments too numerous to list. The name, SpíríTríō is derived from the words “spirit” or
Godly, “Spirituals” the inspiration, and “trio” three singing as one.

Welcome and thank you to our guest musician this morning, Jeremiah Davis. Jeremiah is a classically
trained singer and flutist with a long history in choirs, on opera and musical theater stages, and in
symphonic and pit orchestras throughout the country. He was invited this morning to premiere
Daniel Gledhill’s Misunderstood . According to the composer, it is a song “ about the feelings that [he]
had growing up in a church where you can't really fit in and [you] feel this really intense guilt for
something you can't change.”

I think us here to wonder, myself. To wonder. To ask. And that in wondering ‘bout the big things
and asking ‘bout the big things, you learn about the little ones, almost by accident.
But you never know nothing more about the big things than you start out with.
The more I wonder, the more I love.

                                                                        When you're down and troubled,
And you need some love and care,
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me,
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night.

If the sky above you grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together and call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door

Now, ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold?
They'll hurt you, yes, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them,
Oh, but don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
                                                                      Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
                                                                      And I'll be there
                                                                      You've got a friend

Service Notes

Today, 60% of our non-pledge offering will go to the Unitarian Universalist Association. In our covenant as member congregations of the UUA, it is written that we pledge one another our mutual trust and support. This church’s support for the UUA through this offering, as well as through contributing 89% of our Fair Share contribution in our 2015-16 budget, enables us to embody our pledge of trust and support. Among many other expressions of our faith in the world, the UUA supports Standing on the Side of Love, the Our Whole Lives sexuality education curricula, and Tapestry of Faith religious education resources. This year’s UUA General Assembly is June 22-26 in Columbus, Ohio. Are you interested in attending and representing our congregation as a delegate at the largest annual gathering of UUs in the world? Please contact the church office for more information at office@uusm.org.
