Long, Strange Trip: A UU History

The history of Unitarian and Universalist thought is longer than you might think! Join us for a six-part video and discussion series on the remarkable, revolutionary, and often surprising history of Unitarianism and Universalism, from their roots in the early Christian era through numerous historical controversies to what we know today as the modern UU movement. The series kicks off on Sunday, October 11 at 3:30 pm in Forbes Hall. Each screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by James Witker. We will finish around 5:30 pm, in time for Second Sunday Supper!

October 11: Part I: In the Beginning — (0-1553). Examines the early roots of liberal religious thought from the Council of Nicaea to the two Reformations in the 16th century.

October 25: Part II: Birth of Unitarianism (1553-1794). Chronicles the formation of Unitarian theology in Transylvania and Poland and how it spread west across Europe.

November 1: Part III: American Unitarianism (1620- 1860). The development of Unitarianism in America and its influence on Transcendentalism.

November 8: Part IV: Universalism (1600-1860). The development of Universalism in Europe and the explosion of Universalist churches in America during the early 19th century.

November 15: Part V: Evolution (1861-1961). The evolution of Unitarianism and Universalism from Christian bibleoriented religions to the present-day non-creedal movement.

November 22: Part VI: Unitarian Universalism. The story of the Unitarianism and Universalism courtship and the role of Humanism and Liberal Religious Education in UU’s development.

Childcare is available for all of these sessions on request. Sign up in Forbes Hall at the LRE table after Sunday services or contact James Witker.

The Opening Reception for Vietnam: Land of Diversity, a collection of paintings from Vietnam, will be held on Sunday, September 8 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. These works were gathered by Rhoda Lurie this year. At the reception more than 100 painting will be available for your consideration. Light snacks will be provided.

The exhibit will be open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm and on weekdays by appointment through September 29th. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Rhoda Lurie is an Art Historian who has traversed the many exotic places in the world in pursuit of art and artifacts. She has been to 79 countries and has brought back many items that have enriched many people’s lives.

The Vietnam: Land of Diversity exhibition features many artists that Lurie found as she searched Vietnam earlier this year. She was especially interested in people from the Hill tribes: the Hmong, Tay, Red Dao and Giay in the Sapa areas of the Northwest part of Vietnam.

The colorful paintings in this collection reflect the people, their traditional dress, village life and more. Lurie loved the ethnic diversity, the freedom of the paintings and the beauty that they display. Many of the paintings are on rice paper or canvas. Charcoal drawings, collages and calligraphic paintings in a variety of shapes and sizes add to the wide range of this extensive collection. Each picture is individually matted and ready for framing. A biography of the artist is attached to each picture.

You are invited to enrich your home with a painting or two from this unique and unusual collection.

Contact Art Director, Beverly Alison for further info about this show.

Vision Statement

As a guide to planning for our future, we affirm our present vision of the purposes of the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica to be:

Adopted May 7, 1989

  • To provide a welcoming center for all people who pursue an ongoing quest for understanding, personal growth and ethical living, and to provide a religious center for worship, meditation, celebration and fellowship;

  • To create and nurture a community where the search for truth is free and unhindered; where the dignity, worth and rights of every individual are revered; where spiritual, emotional and intellectual growth are stimulated and encouraged; where the process is open and democratic; where our interdependence with all life on earth is recognized and honored; and where the transforming power of love is acknowledged;

  • To provide for the religious growth and development of children and youth, to guide and support them in their search for understanding, insight and inspiration and to welcome them into the life of the church;

  • To participate in a broader fellowship concerned with social justice, peace and a responsible relationship with the environment, so that we may create a better world for all life today and all life tomorrow.
