UUCCSM RE Students

This month's Art Wall will showcase works from our own UUCCSM Lifespan Religious Education students.

UUCCSM Reads
UUCCSM Reads, a Fiction Reading Group, will meet Monday, January 27, at 7 p.m. in Forbes Hall to discuss “The Lady in the Lake” by Raymond Chandler, the 2012 selection of the SM Library “Reads” group. All are welcome. Please read book before the meeting.

The “Lady in the Lake” is a 1943 detective novel by Raymond Chandler featuring the Los Angeles private investigator Philip Marlowe. The novel’s complicated plot initially deals with the case of a missing woman in a small mountain town an hour or so from the city. Marlowe begins his investigation in the corrupt town of Bay City (modeled on Santa Monica).
UULM Event - Dessert and Dialogue

Rev. Lindi Ramsden, Executive Director of the UU Legislative Ministry in California, will be giving the sermon at UUSM on Sunday, Aug. 12. In addition, and to our great pleasure, she will join us for a "Dessert and Dialogue" event Saturday evening, Aug. 11 in Forbes Hall at 7 PM. The legislative calendar this year in California is a packed one, with many ballot initiatives, including SAFE—ending the death penalty, and other legislative battles, including AB1801 (Ammiano) TRUST Act, restricting the scope of ICE in our communities. Of course the hype of a presidential election will make November even more hectic.

Please come and join us for this chance to exchange ideas with Rev. Lindi about the challenges that we in California face in the coming years (and that many states confront as well). When we have more information from Lindi about her particular concerns for us, we will notify you.

We would like to make this a potluck dessert, so let us know if you can bring something such as fruit, cookies, drinks.

UUSM at Los Angeles Women's March

Excited for Saturday! UUs and friends from all over LA County* will be rallying on the sidewalk outside Bottega Louie on the SE Corner of 7th & Grand at 9AM, then moving toward Pershing Square at 9:40. Bring signs and wear your Standing on the Side of Love or yellow/gold color T-Shirt if you have one. Also bring water, food and sunscreen. Groups are meeting shortly after 8AM at the 17th St. and La Cienega Metro Line stops. If you are planning on taking the train, add value to your tap card before Saturday as lines will be long. Expect delays. Also be prepared for gaps in cell service due to demand and the large number of people who will be in DTLA; best not to rely on text messages to find people!

The event website has now been updated with speakers and schedule.

Questions? Contact UUSM group coordinator Audrey Lyness. We hope to see you there with a few hundred of our friends from the love army. :)

Suggestions on what to bring with you:
A day pack with a small water bottle.
Pack sandwiches, snacks. If you think of it, pack some extra in case someone forgets.
There will be porta potties so also pack: toilet paper or wipes, and hand sanitizer.

UUSM Camp De Benneville Pines Weekend

UUSM De Benneville Pines Camp

JOIN US for UU Santa Monica
All Ages Camp
Fri Sep 16-Sun Sep 18, 2016

Each year, UUCCSM members and friends flock to Camp deBenneville Pines, an idyllic rustic paradise two hours east of Santa Monica (if you leave at the right time on Friday) for  our all-church retreat.  Join us for a weekend of reveling in nature, ping pong tournaments, dam building, s'mores, tie-dying and sing-along versions of every ‘60s song you know (or don’t).

It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the end of summer, and put some intention into fall. You can connect to nature, nourish your spirit, practice archery, go canoeing, and meditate on what it means to be human in a stunning natural environment.

Singles, couples and families young and old enjoy clean mountain air, lots of activities, great camp food and fellowship.  Rustic heated cabins are clean and comfortable, with indoor plumbing and hot showers, for "roughing it, gently".

The downloadable registration form is available HERE.  Or you can fill it out ONLINE.  You can also pay online at the “MAKE A DONATION” link in the upper right-hand corner of this page.  If you'd like more information, contact Jacki Weber.

Prices start at $145/person for adults, $85/person for kids and $110 for teens, and that includes all food and activities for the weekend! AND WHEN YOU SIGN UP BY JULY 30th, YOU SAVE!!!

This year we are also offering a limited number of financial aid "camperships" for those who need it.  If that's your situation, your camp fee is just half-price (down to a slight $70 per adult), and FREE for kids/teens.  Or alternately, if you're flush with cash, you could contribute to the campership pot, which'd help even more campers make it to deBenneville in September.  A full camp is a happy camp and we aim to be very happy.

UU Santa Monica Church Camp at de Benneville Pines
New Dates:  Friday, Saturday, Sunday, October 22, 23, 24

Dear UU Santa Monica Church Community,

Good news:  our church camp was postponed but not cancelled. We will have a weekend at our beloved de Benneville Pines after all!

Our September 17 to 19 weekend became unavailable as a result of a US Forest Service order to close the National Forests for public safety. However, soon, that fire restriction will be lifted.  So we’ll gather in person at church camp the weekend of October 22, 23, 24.

You can still register online HERE. And we hope you will.

Things are flexible. Sign up now, and if it turns out you can’t come, we’ll understand.  We are here to hold each other through this time. If you want to come to camp, let us know. We want this to happen.

Note the Comments section at the end of the registration form, which might be especially useful in this unusual year. Please tell us about special circumstances. We want to hear from you!

If you already registered, that’s still valid, and any money that you have put down is still there! Proof of vaccination will still be required for all participants.

Questions, concerns, offers: email us at debenneville@uusm.org. Let’s venture to beautiful Angeles National Forest near Big Bear — just 100 miles from 18th and Arizona — and refresh our spirits in the mountains.
