Open Meditation
Open Meditation

NEW! Open Meditation: Fri, Sept 22, 7pm-8:30pm. Forbes.

You are cordially invited to a new monthly group called “Open Meditation.” Whether you are a beginner who is just curious about meditation or whether you have been meditating for many years – you are welcome. At its root, Meditation is a natural and deeply human practice. We are not teaching a particular form of meditation or doctrine. You don’t need to know anything, do any particular activity or believe in anything. We will have brief readings, one 25-minute period of sitting with walking meditation, and time for journaling and sharing. You can drop in when it serves you, or come regularly. If you are late, just come in quietly and join us. If you have questions, speak with one of us at coffee hour on Sunday, or give us a call.

We will meet beginning in October every third Friday in Forbes Hall. Facilitators: Beverly Shoenberger and Carol Ring .

Open Meditation
Our group gathers twice a month to sit together quietly for 20 minutes, to walk with gentle awareness for seven minutes, and to explore the integration of meditation with ordinary life through reading and sharing. It is an ongoing drop-in group, so feel welcome to join us whenever it feels right to you. We have found that this time of quiet meditation and shared exploration can be deeply nourishing – a time of simply “being” amidst all the “doing” of our lives. Anyone who senses they would benefit from 20 minutes of silent, non-guided sitting is welcome to join us, whether they have experience or not. Please note there is some time for walking in the courtyard so bring warm clothes in cool weather.

Open Meditation Wellsprings:   Mondays - Online

These are drop-in groups. You are welcome to join us when it feels right to you.  If you come in late or need to leave early, just do so quietly. These are exceptional times, and we trust each person to use the group in the way that fits their need.

We listen to brief readings, sit together quietly for twenty minutes, journal and share with each other what's on our hearts. This time of quiet meditation and sharing can help sustain and ground us during these difficult days - supporting us to pause and rest in our embodied experience, as it is. We simply sit together in our shared humanity. We call off the struggle to become other than we are.

NEW:  We meet every 2nd and 4th Monday evenings, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm..

Taking this time for quiet meditation and sharing in the intimacy of having sat in silence together can help sustain and ground us during these difficult days.

Please email Meditation@UUSM.org for the zoom link and directions for using zoom.

Opening Doors

Some years ago, a little girl came to my home to sell me a bar of chocolate. The encounter became one of the more transformative of my life. Olympia Brown, the first woman sanctioned as a minister by an American denomination, delivered her last sermon only weeks after women had won the right to vote. These two events speak to me of the profound power of this beautiful Unitarian Universalist faith of ours! The speaker is the Associate Minister for Lifespan Religious Programming at the UU Church of the Monterey Peninsula. Music Betsy Bogart, voice, guitar, piano

Opening Hearts: An Embodied Practice Circle

As we prayerfully consider the intersections of holidays, holy days, and seasonal happenings a theme often emerges.  In this Sunday worship offering we encounter and engage the theme together by honoring and exploring the sacred teacher we all share - the human body.

Participants are invited to offer their unique embodied wisdom and Divine understandings as we grapple with practices and questions each week, weaving a co-creative “sermon” together by sharing the insights, awareness, and Love intelligence revealed to us, individually and collectively.

This is a radically inclusive space where all religious identities and mixities are welcomed and celebrated.  Rev. Amelia teaches from the well of embodied practices she is in mindful, reflective, and ongoing relationship with.  Primarily (though not exclusively) these stem from the Bhakti, Sufi, and Christian traditions where her religious identity, practice life, and leadership is rooted.
