Chuka Susan Chesney's Bright soul

The Opening Reception for Chuka Susan Chesney’s Bright Soul exhibit will be on Sunday, March 1 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm in Forbes Hall.

Chesney is an emerging L.A. artist focusing on water color, collage, and mixed media art (and poetry). The exhibit will be open for the first four Sundays in March from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm and on weekdays by appointment. There will be a closing reception on March 22 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.

The artist will attend both receptions and extra items will be available for your consideration. The receptions and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Chesney grew up in a family focused on art, design, and words. Her father owned a commercial printing company and brought home stacks of paper for creating paintings and stories. In 1982 she earned her BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Chesney loves to paint with watercolor and she loves to make collages. Her work often becomes mixed media as she may add pen and ink, brush and ink, pastels, Prismacolors, or embroidery thread to her paintings and collages. She often creates a system of dots, dashes, curly lines to form colorful patterns to convey depth, rhythm, and atmosphere.

She sets her pieces aside for a time so she can look at them with a fresh eye, which sometimes inspire her to add more effects and other times inspire her to cut them up and use the pieces to create new painting or collages. As a piece evolves, she listens to it to hear and see what it wants. She loves to experiment with her art; she loves to not know exactly what it will become. Her studio is her lab.

Chesney has won many awards in shows across the country. Her art has been published in New England Review and Compose Literary Journal. Her poetry and art have been published in Peacock Journal, Lummox, and Altadena Poetry Review. Her poetry anthology Book of Sighs will be published by Little Red Tree in 2020. She is currently working on a poetry and art anthology for the 100 Vibrant Artists of Los Angeles.

Generosity of heart, spirit, and resources is fundamental to the spiritual path. This is taught by all of the great religions of the world. This Sunday, we celebrate the formal launch of  our annual stewardship campaign and explore the meaning of giving to our lives, our beloved community, and the world. We will get to hear the many transformative stories of why so many support this congregation with our first congregational video.

Please note that this was an ONLINE ONLY service. See video link below to watch (or watch again).

Join us online this Sunday as we co-create beloved community together in the midst of a global pandemic. We are temporarily suspending congregational worship gatherings to protect vulnerable members of our congregation and the larger community. We will be providing more information soon so you can watch our special live-streamed service on the church’s Facebook page on Sunday morning. We will consider how we spiritually prepare and fortify ourselves in uncertain times. Help us spread the word about these changes. We look forward to being with you virtually and in spirit on Sunday morning. If you need help getting online, please contact board member Eileen McCormack for assistance.

Note:  the service originally scheduled for today, with DeReau K. Farrar, unfortunately had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 closures.

As you look forward to The Vernal Equinox, the Coming of Spring, and the presence of more light in the world, look around yourself and notice.  What is dancing in the shadows?  What is in the shadows that you might shine more light on?  Come worship with us as we consider what aspects of ourselves we turn to the light and what remains in the shadows.

The democratic principles of our society have been distorted, threatened, and ignored over the centuries. Our religious ancestors played a critical role in establishing democracy in the United States and our fifth Unitarian Universalist Principle affirms: “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.” Join us this Sunday as we explore the state of our democracic republic and what these times are demanding of us.

Discussion and Support for Persons with Disabilities

Come and join us as we share stories, inspirations and find community with each other.  The group offers a forum in which members can feel the benefit of its mutual support. The Disability Support Group will be promoting a dialogue on a selected topic at each of its meetings throughout this church year. There is a different theme for each month. All church members interested in the topic are invited to attend. We hope these topics are of interest to you. The dates and topics are as follows:
