Science Non-Fiction Book Group

7:30 pm, Forbes Hall. Contact: Rebecca Crawford. All are welcome.

On January 21, we will discuss “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry,” by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Today, few of us have time to contemplate the cosmos. So Tyson quickly gives us just what we need to be fluent for the next cosmic headline.

On February 18, we will discuss “The Strength Switch: How the New Science of Strength-Based Parenting Can Help Your Child and Your Teen to Flourish,” by Lea Waters. There is more than one way to raise a child to an independent adulthood. Discovering strengths can be put to unexpected uses.

New Paintings by Bettye Barclay

The Opening Reception for Bettye Barclay’s exhibit, New Paintings, will be held at UU Santa Monica on Sunday, December 1 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Come chat with the artist. At the reception, fused glass and jewelry by Bettye will also be available. Light snacks will be provided.

In Bettye’s own words: “In my painting I move between images and abstraction. Images can evoke a memory of experience, an idea or dream. Abstract shapes lead us into the unknown, a place before appearance of an image.

“In my work I enjoy the dance between abstraction and images and the different qualities and potential that each brings to the process of painting. And I love color, the ways color can speak to the senses in deep and mysterious ways. My love of color is a constant whether images, shapes or abstraction appear in the paintings.

“My paintings are an attempt to express the wholeness of life that is constantly in flux. The tension of the call to new life, the human desire for stasis, and the way life demands movement are ongoing themes. My search is to define and express these tensions and to explore the invisible aspects of being through color, form and balance.

“In painting, as in life, the search for balance and the dis-equilibrium that leads to a point where balance shifts and some new aspect is born into being is an ongoing process.”

The exhibit will be open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon and on weekdays by appointment through December 29. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Our Humanistic Faith

Theme:
Integrity

Rev. Jeremiah Kalendae

Our Unitarian Universalist tradition has six sources which serve as the foundation of our liberal faith. Last month we considered our 1st Source--transcending mystery and wonder--and this month we continue this series with a meditation on our 5th Source: "Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit."

Many of us start the new year making plans for our futures.  We have plans and hopes and dreams for our lives -- none of which is certain, but seldom do we spend as much time thinking about or preparing for our deaths...  Something that we know will happen to each of us.  What then, do you wish for yourself and your loved ones in your death and your dying?  Have you told them?  Sharing the wisdom gleaned from Death Doulas, let us consider your Death Wishes during the month that more people in America die than any other in the year.

We celebrated the birth of this important person in our liberal religious tradition, now let us consider some of the radical teachings that new research into early Christianity and ancient scriptures are illuminating. Join us as we consider the "secret teachings" of Jesus that the empire tried to destroy.

Art Wall Opening Reception, March 1 at 11:00 am at UU Santa Monica

The Opening Reception for Chuka Susan Chesney’s Bright Soul exhibit will be on Sunday, March 1st from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at UU Santa Monica. Chesney is an emerging L.A. artist focusing on water color, collage, and mixed media art (and poetry). The exhibit will be open for the first four Sundays in March from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm and on weekdays by appointment. The exhibit will run through Sunday, March 22nd. There will be a closing reception on March 22 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. The artist will attend both receptions and extra items will be available for your consideration. Light refreshments will be served. The receptions and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Chesney grew up in a family focused on art, design, and words. Her father owned a commercial printing company and brought home stacks of paper for creating paintings and stories. In 1982 she earned her BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Chesney loves to paint with watercolor and she loves to make collages. Her work often becomes mixed media as she may add pen and ink, brush and ink, pastels, Prismacolors, or embroidery thread to her paintings and collages. She often creates a system of dots, dashes, curly lines to form colorful patterns to convey depth, rhythm, and atmosphere. She sets her pieces aside for a time so she can look at them with a fresh eye, which sometimes inspire her to add more effects and other times inspire her to cut them up and use the pieces to create new painting or collages. As a piece evolves, she listens to it to hear and see what it wants. She loves to experiment with her art; she loves to not know exactly what it will become. Her studio is her lab.

Chesney has won many awards in shows across the country. Her art has been published in New England Review and Compose Literary Journal. Her poetry and art have been published in Peacock Journal, Lummox, and Altadena Poetry Review. Her poetry anthology Book of Sighs will be published by Little Red Tree in 2020. She is currently working on a poetry and art anthology for the 100 Vibrant Artists of Los Angeles.
