Camp deBenneville Pines UUCCSM Weekend Retreat

Each year, UUCCSM members and friends flock to Camp deBenneville Pines, an idyllic rustic paradise  two hours east of Santa Monica (if you leave at the right time on Friday) for a weekend of reveling in   nature, ping pong tournaments, dam building, s'mores, tie-dying and sing-along versions of every ‘60s  song you know (or don’t).

New this year, get to know UUCCSM’s intern minister, Nica Eaton-Guinn, and spend some quality time with  DRE Catherine Farmer Loya and her family.

You are invited to join us! Singles, couples and families young and old enjoy clean mountain air, lots of activities, great camp food and fellowship. Rustic heated cabins are clean and comfortable, with indoor plumbing and hot showers, for "roughing it, gently".

Sign-ups are currently underway.  Please see our 2014 Camp Flier...and 2014 Registration Form. You can also pay online.

Prices start at $145/person for adults, $85/person for kids and $110 for teens, and that includes all food  and activities for the weekend!

This year we are also offering a limited number of financial aid "camperships" for those who need it. If  that's your situation, your camp fee is just half-price (down to a slight $73 per adult), and FREE for kids/teens. Or alternately, if you're flush with cash, you could contribute to the campership pot, which'd help even more campers make it to deBenneville in September. A full camp is a happy camp and we aim to be very happy.

Peace and Social Justice - Guest Speaker on the Syrian situation

MAKING SENSE OF THE SYRIAN TRAGEDY

In the three years since the Syrian uprising erupted, over 100,000 people have been killed, millions have been displaced, and civil war has become the dominant dynamic.  On Sunday, April 20, Ziad Abu-Rish will speak on the crisis, highlighting the major causes and dynamics of the conflict as well as the question of U.S. responsibility.  Ziad is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles.  He holds an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University and a B.A. in History from Whitman College.  His research interests focus on the political economy and cultural constructions of state formation in the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean), and he teaches courses on a broad array of topics related to the history of the modern Middle East.  He is co-editor of The Dawn of the Arab Uprisings: End of an Old Order (Pluto Press, 2012) and serves on the editorial teams of the Arab Studies Journal and Jadaliyya E-zine. .

AAHS Event - Viewing of Neil Tyson's "COSMOS"

It was 13.8 billion and 24 years in the making, but finally, the new COSMOS is here. On Sunday, March 9, FOX Television will premiere “COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey,” hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. AAHS is inviting the entire congregation for a viewing party that night at UUCCSM. We’ll gather beginning at 8:30 p.m. before the show airs from 9 to 10 p.m. Twenty-four years after Carl Sagan told us “we are all made of star stuff” in the original “COSMOS: A Personal Voyage,” his widow and writing partner, Ann Druyan, has teamed up with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to bring us an all-new, updated 13-part series. Our understanding of the universe has changed since 1980 and this new “COSMOS” will show us some of what we’ve learned about it since then: exoplanets around other stars, water on Mars, and an accelerating universe driven by the mysterious forces of dark energy.

AAHS: Agnostics, Atheists, Humanists & Secularists invites you to join us for the premiere of the first episode of this much-anticipated television event. We’ll be projecting the broadcast in the Sanctuary (following the 2nd Sunday Supper in Forbes Hall, for those who would like to attend both). Parking at the 16th and Arizona structure will be available and we’ll be arranging an after-party to share our thoughts on the show at a location to be determined.
Check the AAHS table in Forbes Hall on Sundays following services for more information.

Buddhist-Inspired Photography

Our February Art Wall exhibit, “Two Photographers Inspired by Buddhist Teachings,” opens with a reception at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, and runs through February 27. All the works are for sale, with part of the proceeds
benefiting UUCCSM.

Photographer Karen Redding is showing selected works from “Travels Through Humanity,” her social documentary of indigenous people she has met in many parts of the world. UUCCSM member, Carol Ring, is showing works created by combining three evocative photos with a brief, superimposed “loving-kindness” phrase.

Karen became a professional photographer in 2008. She has worked as a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with a private practice and runs a mindfulness meditation practice. This background, combined with her passion for travel, inspires her relationship to her subjects and how she interprets what she sees. The work embraces the human landscape of diversity while highlighting what it means to be human: our need for connection; a quest for safety and a sense of belonging; our innate desire to be seen and accepted deeply. These photos from her travels have received favorable reviews in several art exhibitions in Southern California. Read more about her work at www.karenkredding.com

Carol always carries her camera, often stopping to shoot whatever captures her eye: reflections  clouds, graffiti, land and cityscapes, or just interesting abstractions of shapes and colors. She recently retired from a career as a graphic artist, and is becoming an ardent meditator and student of Buddhism and neuropsychology.

Each piece in this show features one photo that serves as a visual frame for two other images and a mindfulness or metta (loving-kindness) phrase superimposed. The works are meant to “re-mind” the viewer to be more  present, to relax more deeply into a felt-sense of our true nature. These prints are made by infusing dyes onto coated brushed aluminum. See this show and all of Carol’s artwork at http://www.yessy.com/carolring

Admission to this show is free, all works are for sale. Opening Reception: Sunday, February 2, 2014 at  1:00. Meet Karen K. Redding and Carol Ring. Light refreshments. Closing Reception:  Sunday, February 22, 2014 at 12:00 - 1:30. Open Sundays in February from 9AM - 1 PM.  Open by appointment Monday through Friday.  Contact: Nancy assistant@uusm.org, 310-829-5436, ext. 102
