Reception for Rev. Judith Meyer

Please join in a welcome reception for our minister emerita, Judith Meyer, Saturday, January 25, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Cottage.  It's actually a Tea, complete with china cups, fancy cakes, little sandwiches -- lovingly prepared to honor our Minister Emerita and her husband, David Denton.

Then on Sunday, January 26, plan to return for either the 9:00 or 11:00 a.m.  Judith returns to the pulpit with the Rev. Rebecca Benefiel Bijur as worship leader.  Every stage of life poses challenges, but retirement age, whether we remain employed or not, seems to demand something entirely new from us.  Judith retired over five years ago after serving this congregation for 15 years, and the denomination for a long time before that. She will share with us what she has learned lately, as well as what she must keep learning, now.

Art Wall Opening Reception - Karen Redding & Carol Ring

Our February Art Wall exhibit, Two Photographers Inspired by Buddhist Teachings, opens with a reception at 1pm on Sunday, February 2 and runs through the 27th.  All the works are for sale, with part of the proceeds benefiting UUCCSM.

Photographer Karen Redding is showing selected works from Travels Through Time, her social documentary of indigenous people she has met in many parts of the world. UUCCSM member Carol Ring is showing works created by combing three evocative photos with a brief, superimposed “loving-kindness” phrase.

Karen became a professional photographer in 2008. She has worked as a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with a private practice and runs a mindfulness meditation practice. This background, combined with her passion for travel, inspires her relationship to her subjects and how she interprets what she sees. The work embraces the human landscape of diversity while highlighting what it means to be human: our need for connection; a quest for safety and a sense of belonging; our innate desire to be seen and accepted deeply. Karen sees her growing body of photographic work, Travels Through Humanity, as a social documentary focusing on indigenous people.  This work has received attention in several art exhibitions in Southern California. Read more about Karen’s work at www.karenkredding.com.

Carol always carries her camera, often stopping to shoot whatever captures her eye: reflections, clouds, graffiti, land and cityscapes, or just interesting abstractions of shapes and colors. She recently retired from a career as a graphic artist, and is becoming an ardent meditator and student of Buddhism. Each piece in this show comprises of one photo that serves as a visual frame for two other images and a mindfulness or loving-kindness phrase, or metta, superimposed. The works are meant to “re-mind” the viewer to be more present, to relax more deeply into a felt-sense of our true nature. These prints are made by infusing dyes onto coated brushed aluminum. Read more on Carol’s work at  http://www.yessy.com/carolring.

Advanced Directives Workshop

UUs gather to boldly explore a variety of important topics throughout our lives. We’ve invited a local expert, UCLA family physician Robert Ashley, M.D., to discuss with us end-of-life care, how to choose a durable power of attorney for healthcare, and how to make choices about the direction of our healthcare. He will give you information and the applicable forms and he’s eager to hear your questions. He’s even written a novel on the topic. This workshop is for adults of every age — singles, parents, partners, friends — and it’s free.

An Advance Directive is like what used to be called a Living Will. It’s a legal document that tells doctors and
hospitals what they can and cannot do regarding your care; that is, you can make medical decisions and practical arrangements now in case you are seriously injured or ill and cannot speak for yourself. Do you — or do you not — want particular kinds of medical interventions, under what circumstances? Who needs to know what you think about this? How can an Advance Directive help protect your family and friends from unnecessary grief and trauma? What are the rules about entering hospice care? Would a trust help you make sensible legal and financial planning decisions, or is a will enough? How do you want to distribute your assets? How can all these decisions reflect your UU values?

The Rev. Rebecca Benefiel Bijur, the Rev. Silvio Nardoni, and members of our Caregivers’ Support Group will bookend the discussion in Forbes Hall on Sunday, March 30. You are warmly invited to the first of two sessions; this one will focus on medical decisions, and the second, later this year, will focus on financial and administrative responsibilities. UUCCSM Reads

UUCCSM Reads, a Fiction Reading Group, will meet Monday, January 27, at 7 p.m. in Forbes Hall to discuss “The Lady in the Lake” by Raymond Chandler, the 2012 selection of the SM Library “Reads” group. All are welcome. Please read book before the meeting.

The “Lady in the Lake” is a 1943 detective novel by Raymond Chandler featuring the Los Angeles private investigator Philip Marlowe. The novel’s complicated plot initially deals with the case of a missing woman in a small mountain town an hour or so from the city. Marlowe begins his investigation in the corrupt town of Bay City (modeled on Santa Monica).
