AAHS Event - Special guest author Buzzy Jackson

AAHS: Agnostics, Atheists, Humanists & Secularists invites you to an evening of the “sublime without the divine" as we welcome author “Buzzy” Jackson, who will be sharing from her new book  “The Inspirational Atheist: Wise Words on the Wonder and Meaning of Life”, which was released December 30, 2014.  This book is not just for nonbelievers. “The Inspirational Atheist” is not an angry call to arms, but a rationalist’s heartening call to optimism. It is a collection of wise observations by philosophers, poets, scientists, and even chefs and comedians, offering their insights on the world and our place in it, humanists who believe that our life has meaning when we live it meaningfully. “The Inspirational Atheist” is a book of quotations by and for people who seek inspiration not in religious texts but in the universe around us, for those who feel that the world itself — nature, the universe, moon landings — supplies as much awe and amazement as we’ll ever need. Join AAHS on Saturday, February 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary for Buzzy’s slideshow and Q&A, followed by a reception and book-signing in Forbes Hall. Free and open to the public; donations will be solicited. Contact Ian Dodd for further information

2nd Sunday Cinema

2nd Sunday Cinema -- Faith in Action presents: "Occuply 101" Sunday, Dec. 14th at 7:30PM following 2nd Sunday Supper

Although made in 2006 before the most recent tragic events in Gaza, this documentary "presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions. The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace." It features scholars, activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices are usually not heard in mainstream media outlets. A group viewed portions of the film with guest speakers on Wednesday night; here we'll watch it in its entirety. Runtime: 90 min.

JoAnn Damron-Rodriguez

Please join us for the opening of a special exhibit by artist JoAnn Damron-Rodriguez as she presents her debut show, “Dreams,” on Sunday, December 7, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. The show will run on our Art Wall through Sunday, December 28, and is open to the public Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on weekdays by appointment.

JoAnn Damron-Rodriguez recently retired as a university professor and has moved into the art world to help convey her feelings and experiences of the dream world. A self-taught artist, JoAnn communicates her feelings and expressions about dreams by combining ink, paint, and textured acrylic mixtures with photographs, appropriated art, words, and objects.

JoAnn notes that the many different types of media, vivid color palettes, and subsequent layers allow her to more fully represent the depths, disjunctures, and fragments that shape many of our dreams. Through her art, she hopes to help convey an understanding of how the feelings expressed by dreams relate to conscious life.

JoAnn is at the beginning of her artistic career after retiring from an illustrious career in education. She was an Adjunct Professor of Social Welfare at UCLA, and received the 2006 Distinguished Teaching Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Council on Gerontology (CCGG). She has over 20 years of experience in health, mental health, and hospice care. She has served on multiple editorial boards and scientific review committees and has published extensively on geriatric education, diversity in aging, and elder care.
