Catherine Tirr - Art Class
Catherine Tirr Presents In Situ
In April, the Art Wall in Forbes Hall will display works from Catherine Tirr’s Plein Air Painting class at Santa Monica College’s Emeritus College. Devoted to working in situ, the students have created paintings in a variety of locations in Santa Monica, Venice, and Malibu.

The class meets Friday mornings for three hours. The students bring mostly water color and sometimes oil paint to work with, along with boundless enthusiasm.

Catherine Tirr has been teaching the Plein Air Painting class since 2000. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from Ravensbourne College of Art and a Master’s Degree from Chelsea School of Art and Design, both in London. She continues to paint and exhibit her work, while teaching at Santa Monica College and Pierce College.

Catherine Tirr is an award-winning artist whose works have been exhibited widely in Europe and the United States. Tirr was born in England and studied at Chelsea School of Art in London. Her work in one of her first group exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art, London, in 1979 was awarded the Stowells Trophy.

Catherine Tirr is well known for painting expressive watercolors of various landscapes. She describes her interest thus, “the landscape we see is a combination of chance events, relationships and juxtapositions, constantly in flux. Yet the shadow of what was formerly there can still be traced, just as random boulders deposited along a broad moraine suggest the shape and scope of a glacier that is no longer there.”

After successful shows in England and Iceland, Tirr relocated to the U.S. and has since exhibited at Detroit’s Robert Kidd Gallery and Fischer Gallery, the Sixth Street Gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Armand Hammer Museum, and San Francisco’s Olga Dollar Gallery. Catherine Tirr has been teaching the Plein Air Painting class in the Santa Monica Emeritus College program since 2000.

Catherine Tirr is also the author of “Saturation,” and “The Color of Hindsight,” both portfolios of her paintings. Her work is represented by Double Vision Gallery, Los Angeles and The Gascoigne Gallery, Leeds, England.

May Worship Theme: What Binds Us

There are names for what binds us:
strong forces, weak forces.
Look around, you can see them…

-- Jane Hirshfield
In our UU faith, we are bound together not by creed or dogma, but by covenant, the sacred promises we make with one another about who we are and how we want to be in community together. We often quote our Seven Principles, yet rarely repeat the concluding lines of the congregational covenant from which they come:

Grateful for the religious pluralism which enriches and ennobles our faith, we are inspired to deepen our understanding and expand our vision. As free congregations we enter into this covenant, promising one another our mutual trust and support.

Join Rev. Rebecca and our worship leaders for a month-long exploration of covenant, mutual trust and support, and what binds us to one another, to our living tradition, and to the wider world.

May 22 Sermon:  Caught in the Web

What brings you to church and what keeps you here? Come explore what it means to be UU, and stay for our Annual Meeting, where voting members of our congregation will elect our Board of Directors, take action on congregational resolutions about the Black Lives Matter movement and Green Sanctuary status, and adopt a budget for the coming fiscal year. Our services will also feature a special guest from the UU Service Committee, speaking about how Unitarian Universalists are supporting Syrian children and families in the largest refugee movement in Europe since World War II.
