Campaign to Raise Funds for Student Inmates
The Peace and Social Justice Committee is renewing the campaign to raise funds for student inmates in the California Prison System.

The fund provides for textbooks for inmates who are taking courses through a community college.  Although the courses are free, students must pay for textbooks, which are often quite expensive.  Letters from inmates who received textbooks through the fund point out how important they are for the continuation of their education and their hopes for the future.

For those interested in contributing, checks can be made out to UUCCSM, with FIA Textbook Fund in the memo line, and sent directly to the church. (Those donating cash should indicate that the funds are for the Textbook Fund.  In addition, for tax purposes, please provide your name, date, and amount of donation.) Cash and checks will also be collected at the FIA table in Forbes Hall. Online donations are also accepted. This is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of inmates in the California prison system.

8/5/15 UPDATE:

A member of our congregation, John Sussman, has pledged to add $500 when donations for the textbook fund reaches $1,500!  As of August 5, donations are at $1,100.

Can Democracy Save the Planet?
Can I Ever Forgive Myself?

Of the different kinds of forgiveness that life requires of us, the most difficult of all is to forgive ourselves. Yom Kippur begins this day at sundown. Chalice Lighting Remarks by Karen Brodie

Love is the doctrine of this church. The quest of truth is its sacrament, And service is its prayer.

We will spend our September Sundays together exploring these affirmations in our covenant, asking ourselves what they mean to us and how we can live by them in today’s world.

Can I Get a Connection?

Loneliness is a huge mental health problem.  Many adults state a want to feel more connected to those around them.  In a world that offers so many ways to connect, our church community can offer the kind of connection that helps us be in deep relationship with each other.

Can We Make Room Enough for Love?
Unitarians are proud to say they “stand on the side of love”. But what side is that? When we granted others the right to love who they choose, was it conditional upon making that love follow existing societal norms? Did acceptance come at the price of conformation? Or can we broaden our definition of love and loving relationships to include those that challenge the traditional norms? Can we make room enough for love?

Can You Hear Me Now? Learning to Listen on the Road to Repair
When our body and brain perceives danger we are unable to take in information. Are we communicating in a way that others can hear and take in our information? How we communicate makes the difference. When we blow it and make mistakes, how can we repair it? Learning and owning your feelings are the first step in repairing any relationship. The steps to repair relationships and how our church community can utilize these steps in our ongoing repair process.
