“I'm here to fight for truth, justice and the American way.” - Superman

Is Superman a Unitarian Universalist? Who are our superheros and just what is it that makes one a superhero? Is it possible that as we work together to create a world that turns aside from racism, violence, dehumanization, and disregard for suffering that we too can be superheros?

Last year, anti-racism activist Bryan Stevenson - with allies at the Southern Poverty Law Center - raised money and opened a new museum in Montgomery AL that chronicles the personal, histoirical and violent narrative of our relationship with race in the US.  This service is based on a slam poetry style sermon telling the story of how the black experience moved from slavery through Jim Crow reconstruction, through Civil Rights and right into a new era of systemic White Supremacy.  This service will trace our progess through a photograph, stories and music.

Heart and Soul is a contemplative worship service series that usually occurs on the second Sunday of each month. It is a shorter, more intimate service, with singing, statements, and questions, silence, and sharing. Readings, poems, quotes, and music are drawn from a variety of sources, including the UU Soul Matters Sharing Circle, our hymnals, and popular/folk music.

Please note audio is currently unavailable for Heart & Soul services.

Loneliness is a huge mental health problem.  Many adults state a want to feel more connected to those around them.  In a world that offers so many ways to connect, our church community can offer the kind of connection that helps us be in deep relationship with each other.

Adult Programs - Humanist Voices

Is God a White Racist?

In January, Humanist Voices will read and discuss the book, “Is God a White Racist?” By Rev. William R. Jones, an African American UU minister, theologian, and professor. The work was originally published by Beacon Press (UUA) in the 1970s. Some copies of the book will be available at the RE table in Forbes or can be purchased in paperback or Kindle version from Amazon or other sellers.

In this powerful examination of the early liberation methodology of James Cone and others, Jones questions whether their foundation for black Christian theism—the belief in an omnibenevolent God who has dominion over human history—can provide an adequate theological foundation to effectively dismantle the economic, social, and political framework of oppression.

Seeing divine benevolence as part of oppression's mechanism of disguise, Jones argues that black liberation theologians must adopt a new theism that is informed by humanism and its principle of the functional ultimacy of wo/man, where human choice and action determine whether our condition is slavery or freedom.

UUSM HISTORY PART II (2010-present)

We hope you all will make plans to join us on January 6 for two great opportunities.

One of the very best story-tellers – REV. MEG BARNHOUSE - in our UU (or any) tradition will be preaching the morning services.

Immediately afterward, from 1:00 – 3:00pm, we will have the follow up to the HISTORY PART I workshop we held last year.  History Part II will describe the years from 2010-present.  These years – leading into and out of Rev. Rebecca’s ministry – are both complex and crucial for everyone to understand. Our success or failure in exploring, accepting and learning from this time will be one of the most important determinants in whether and how we move forward into the future or stay stuck in the past.   A light lunch will be served.
