Board Relationship to Committees

Approved by the Board of Directors June 12, 2007

All committees are to be made up of at least three members of the church. Friends of the church may serve on committees, but not chair them, unless otherwise stipulated by the bylaws or Board of Directors.

Complaints about the function of or decisions made by committees shall be referred to an Ombuds-group consisting of the president, the minister and the chair of the Nominating Committee.

Committees shall be operational or other. Operational committees have assignments that relate to the functioning of the church. They include the committees provided for in the bylaws (Finance, Personnel, Social Action, Religious Exploration and Nominating Committee), as well as committees established by the Board of Directors to deal with specific management issues, such as Membership & Leadership. Chairs of operational committees established by the Board shall serve a maximum of four consecutive years.

Activity groups are for the enjoyment of their members and have no membership restrictions or term limits.

Bodies, Blessings and Bucket Lists
Join us for a special Sunday in which we celebrate the 90th Birthday of our Minister Emeritus, Rev. Ernie Pipes, with distinguished guest Rev. Bill Schulz. Bill gave the inaugural Ernest D Pipes Lecture in 1991 and joins us now 25 years later with more wisdom to share both on Sunday morning and as he delivers the Pipes Lecture at 3pm on 10/23. Rev. Judith Meyer will also join us on Sunday morning via a recorded video tribute to Ernie.

Bill Schulz, recently retired from full-time ministry and from the presidency of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, will reflect on the how each stage of our life journeys require of us different religious disciplines.  Bill is a senior fellow in human rights at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and an affiliated minister at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago.

Bonnie Lambert will be showing New Light, a collection of her most recent works in vivid oils, in the gallery in Forbes Hall in October. You will likely recognize the locations of some of the subjects of her paintings. The Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, October 7, from 12:00–1:30 pm. The exhibit will be open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm and on weekdays by appointment. It will run through October 28. It is free and open to the public.

In Lambert’s words: “Using vibrant color and expressive brushstrokes, my oil paintings contrast the beauty of the natural world with the ‘hand of man’ in local urban settings. Nature plays a prominent role in my use of color and light. I’m drawn to spectacular sunsets and sunrises, the shock of skies before and after showers, late afternoon light stretching long shadows, and fog blurring the world.

“My mission is to communicate the joyous, wild beauty of nature reflected through urban spaces. I ask viewers to observe objects so common that they’ve become invisible, and to see them in a new light.”

Lambert earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and she was a professional actress for nearly two decades. In the early 1990s she studied art for two years at The Art Center School of Design in Pasadena before she met her mentor–museum-collected Latina artist Margaret Garcia in 2009. Since Lambert’s first solo exhibit in 2011, she has participated in more than 80 shows and exhibitions in galleries and museums. Her theatrical background lends natural drama and mystery to her work which brings out joy and celebration.

Contact Our Art Director, Beverly Alison for further info about this show or about exhibiting on our Art Wall.

Land and light are constantly in a dance, and we are partners in that dance. When I paint, my goal is to fully capture the joy that this ever-changing interplay between the light and the land moves in me.

Then I hope my work communicates this ecstasy.

My creativity is given a boost taking long walks with my wonderful rescue dog Scout while photographing L.A.’s dramatic shifts in light. I also enjoy freelancing as a book and magazine designer.

I studied at The Art Center School of Design in Pasadena (Mary Yanish, Mark Strickland, Ray Turner, and David Limrite), and with Glassell Park oil painter Judith Amdur and acclaimed Chicana artist Margaret Garcia.

My oil paintings have been shown in juried exhibits at:

• Avenue 50 Gallery — Highland Park
• dA Gallery — Pomona
• Fremont Gallery — South Pasadena
• NoHo Gallery — North Hollywood
• Casa 0101 — Boyle Heights
• El Centro del Pueblo — L.A.
• ChimMaya Gallery — East L.A.
• The Beverly Hills Art Show

Artist’s reception is Sunday, March 3, at noon.
