Second Sunday Cinema The FIA Peace and Social Justice Committee invites you to a screening of March’s Second Sunday Cinema film, “Occupation 101: Voices of the Silenced Majority,” on Sunday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Produced in 2006, the documentary provides a comprehensive history of the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, beginning with the rise of Zionism in the 1880s, and particularly focuses on the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. It questions the ethics of U.S. monetary/ military support of Israel and it presents interviews with Israeli and American scholars, religious leaders and humanitarian workers — more than half of whom are Jewish — who are critical of the injustices and human rights abuses stemming from Israeli policies in the occupied territories. A discussion will follow the screening. We hope you will join us. |

Saparmurat Niyazov, self-appointed President for Life of Turkmenistan, used his "holy book", the Ruhnama, to justify and propagate his despotic regime until his death in 2006. The film's satirical approach lays bare the support he received from profiteers despite systemic abuses of human rights.

Second Sunday Cinema - Conspiracy: The Sustainability Secret
Conspiracy: The Sustainability Secret
Join us for Second Sunday Cinema in March, sponsored by the Green Living Committee and Peace & Social Justice Committee.
Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it.
Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged.
As Andersen approaches leaders in the environmental movement, he increasingly uncovers what appears to be an intentional refusal to discuss the issue of animal agriculture, while industry whistleblowers and watchdogs warn him of the risks to his freedom and even his life if he dares to persist.

Second Sunday Cinema - FIA/PSJ Film Screening: "This Changes Everything"
Whatever the outcome of the UN climate change conference in Paris—and it doesn’t appear that the agreement will be close to sufficient to limit the rise of temperature to 1.5-2.0 degrees Celsius—people around the world will still have to mobilize in great numbers to put pressure on their governments to drastically limit the amount of carbon released into the air.
In the film This Changes Everything (2015, directed by Avi Lewis) based on Naomi Klein’s bestselling book of the same title, Klein presents portraits of seven communities on five continents struggling with the consequences of climate change. She connects the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there and concludes that we can seize the crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better. On January 10 the Peace and Social Justice Committee will screen the film in the Sanctuary at 7:30 after Second Sunday Supper. It is 90 minutes long and we will have a discussion afterward. We hope you will join us!
