Adult Programs

Come, come, whoever you are.

Welcome to an exciting journey of questioning, challenging, and celebrating life’s mysteries and wonders. For generations, Adult Programs at UU Santa Monica has welcomed seekers, exiles, and interfaith families along with those who have grown up in our own Unitarian Universalist tradition. We are a congregation made up of people who believe in a God or higher power, people who do not, those who are content to live with mystery, and those who are ever searching for answers to the big questions. But most of all, we are enriched by one another’s life journeys, diverse beliefs, shared progressive values and uniting UU Principles as we learn and explore together.

Adult Programs offers classes, discussion groups and special events on an array of topics relevant to the Six Sources and our congregation’s spiritual life. Some of these may include in-depth study of theology and spirituality, discussion of science writing or Humanist ideas, opportunities to explore music, arts and crafts, or chances to connect socially for fellowship and fun. Many programs are made possible through the time and talent of our members and friends. Do you have an idea for a program or event? We want to hear it.

At its core, the purpose of our educational ministry is to provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to deepen their spiritual lives, and live with compassion, integrity and joy as we nurture beloved community and work together for peace and justice in this world.

This is a class for those who are tired of waiting around for their “real life” to start. It is a class that will jump start us out of our ruts, our avoidance, our fears, our unrealistic fantasies and propel us into more ac-ceptance, more focus, more intentional, more accountability and surround us with people who will love us into the people we’ve always wanted to be.

Adult Programs - "What You Can Believe if You Don't Believe in God?" -cancelled 11/29 & 12/15
Session 1

Monday, December 5, 4-6pm

Session 2
Sunday, December 9, 3-5pm
Saturday, December 15, 4-6pm - cancelled

In December we will read and discuss an address entitled “Why Teach Religion in an Age of Science?” by Sophia Lyon Fahs, the famous scholar and educator who revolutionized RE and contributed to the “Unitarian Renaissance” of the 1940s.

"The world we now know is one. The universe is one. Mankind is one brotherhood. We even belong in the family of atoms and stars. Reality can no longer be divided into clear-cut contraries, the material and spiritual, the animate and the inanimate, the temporal and eternal, the body and mind, good and evil, today and tomorrow, Jew and Gentile, Christian and Pagan, the secular and religious, even the Creator and the created. The dividing walls are down... Let us then walk forward rather than backward. The unique historical memories in our special religious cultures call today for less loyalty and more understanding, less praise and more honest self-criticism. Our direction needs to be forward. It is not our ancestors who will be changed by what we do. It is our contemporaries, and our descendants for generations to come, for whom we should be feeling responsibilities. 'For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.'”

Adult Programs - Awakening the Sage Within - A FREE workshop with Connie Zweig

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you really are.” ~ Carl Jung

Today, for the first time in history, most people approaching their elder years can expect to live for another two or three decades. But how do you want to live those years? Research now shows that people with positive self-perceptions as they age will live longer, healthier lives.

We will gather for two 3-hour workshops to explore Sage-ing or conscious aging, a model for late life that can help us to live with more awareness, joy, and purpose facilitated by Connie Zweig, Ph.D. Sat. April 27, 2:00-5:00 pm and Sunday, April 28 2:00-5:00 pm Unitarian Universalist Church: 1260 18th St.

FREE! PRE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

A FREE workshop with Connie Zweig, Ph.D.
Sat. April 27, 2:00-5:00 pm and Sun. April 28 2:00-5:00 pm
Unitarian Universalist Church: 1260 18th St.

The Program: Today, for the first time in history, most people approaching their elder years can expect to live for another two or three decades. But how do you want to live those years? Research now shows that people with positive self-perceptions as they age will live longer, healthier lives.

We will gather for two 3-hour workshops to explore Sage-ing or conscious aging, a model for late life that can help us to live with more awareness, joy, and purpose. This inner work of aging opens the opportunity for seniors to become Elders--Awakening the Sage Within.

We will introduce aging as a spiritual journey, our images/fears of aging, harvesting wisdom from our life review, forgiveness to release the past, and facing our mortality.

The Presenter: Connie has been in private practice as a therapist in Los Angeles for 25 years. I am the co-author of the bestsellers Meeting the Shadow and Romancing the Shadow, author of Meeting the Shadow of Spirituality, and the forthcoming book The Reinvention of Age. I am a Certified Sage-ing Leader with Sage-ing International.

Pre-registration is required at dre@uusm.org. No walk-ins.
