Lux Aeterna

Lux Aeterna is a Latin phrase meaning “eternal light.” What inspiration can we find in our own lives from the light of faith, the light of inspiration, or the light of fellowship we bring to one another?

Mahashivaratri: The Bhakti Poet-Saints

Mahashivaratri — “the Great Night of Shiva” in the Hindu tradition — has arrived once again! For the past two years we’ve honored this important Hindu festival with a special service. This year we will hear from the great devotional poet-saints and progressive reformers of this tradition. Join us for this holiday service marking the removal of ignorance and the sacred cosmic dance of creation and destruction.
Mahin Rahimzadeh

Mahin Rahimzadeh was born in Iran and studied literature and history in Tehran University. She moved in 1980 to

the United States where she continued her studies, concentrating on drawing and painting at Pierce College.

At Santa Monica College she refined her skills by studying oil painting, watercolor use, ceramics, and photography.
Her focus on photography was developed by working with Larry Shapiro. She has been featured at Baby Blue
Barbecue Restaurant and Abbot Kinney Festival. Two of her photographs are on permanent exhibition at Santa
Monica College. Currently she practices the Sufi traditions and reads the poetry of Rumi to feed her art and her soul.

She is a new member of our UUCCSM congregation.

There will be a reception for the artist on October 14 after the second service.

Maija Beeton - Citizen Artist|Citizen Scientist
Maija Beeton’s painting series CITIZEN ARTIST | CITIZEN SCIENTIST presents new works inspired by, and derived from, community interplay. Exploring themes of biological patterns and scale, the presented works were created in Beeton’s studio and at Mark Twain Middle School, Hamilton High School and Santa Monica College.

UUCCSM member Maija Beeton is a fine artist who designs and produces media for emerging technologies, internet venues, video games and broadcast. Beeton is the recipient of a 2008 Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in graphic design and the winner of the 2015 WonderWomenTech Hackathon. She is a former American Film Institute Digital Media Filmmaker-In-Residence and is a graduate of the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

Maija Beeton - The Cel Art Project
Please join us after the second service on Sunday, October 5, for the artist’s opening reception for the CEL ART PROJECT with Emmy-awarding winning artist Maija Beeton. The show will run through Sunday, October 26 and is open to the public Sundays, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., and on weekdays by appointment. Beeton enjoys exploring the alleged distinctions between commercial art, fine art, entertainment and philosophy. Her media include painting, video, animation, theatre, music, text, and landscaping. The CEL ART PROJECT is an homage to 2D Cartoons and a meditation on the loss of the individual human mark in contemporary industrial strength computer generated
animation. The majority of Beeton’s CEL ART pieces employ the traditional 2D animation technique of hand painted cel vinyl on clear media.

The cel vinyl paint is manufactured by Cartoon Colour in Culver City, a company that has supplied American animators for over 50 years. Acetate sheets are used for the clear media.

These painted graphics are then layered over abstract expressionist backgrounds which have been reproduced from original paintings as digital prints. The two large works in the show combine abstract expressionist painting, representational drawing and 3D digital modelling.

Please contact Nancy at assistant@uusm.org, (310) 829-5436 ext. 102 for appointments to view Art Wall during the week. Contact UU Santa Monica Art Director Beverly Alison for information about exhibiting on the Art Wall.

FIA Textbook Fund

A few years ago UUSM joined with several other UUs throughout the state of California to raise funds for textbooks for inmates who were taking courses through a community college.  Although the courses are free, students must pay for textbooks, which are often quite expensive.  At UUSM we set a goal of $750, which was exceeded by more than 100  percent, with a final total of over $2,000.

We have now received several letters from inmates who received textbooks through the fund, expressing their gratitude for the textbooks and for the opportunity provided to continue their education.  Many indicated how they hope to use what they learn to help others.  The need for textbooks for student inmates continues, and we are re-launching the campaign to raise funds, this time with a goal of $1,500.   As before, the funds are being administered by Faith in Action.   At the end of the campaign, UUCCSM will send a check for the total to a foundation set up by the community college; the foundation then provides scholarships (the Unitarian Universalist Textbook Scholarships) for student inmates to be used to pay for textbooks.

If you would like to donate to this effort, please click here or on the blue donation button, above, and specify that you would like your donation to go to the "FIA Textbook Fund."

Making Amends (Sermon at UUSM)
If good fences make good neighbors, what can you say about the wall around your heart? During the Days of Awe, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we are invited to reflect on the unnecessary fences we have built or caused to be built, and to consider what we might do to mend them, lower them or just take them down. For what might you make amends?
