Jessie KB's Science Through Art

The Opening Reception for Jessica Kendall-Bar’s exhibit, Science through Art, will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2020 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Come chat with the artist; she is a PhD candidate in Marine Biology who believes that scientific progress is futile unless communicated successfully. During the reception, marine mammal themed pillows, phone cases, bags, t-shirts and other goodies will be available for your consideration. Light snacks will be provided. The exhibit will be open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon and on weekdays by appointment through January 26th. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Jessica’s illustrations, photography, and cinematography aim to accurately portray science and its role in preserving the underwater ecosystem. She has illustrated two children’s books. The Castor Oil Rig Tales, published by AzBukiVeri Press, depicts the conservation success story of a community of marine organisms, which colonizes an abandoned oil rig. Her illustrations for a second children’s book, Looking for Marla, tells the story of a clownfish which changes sex from male to female (which is what male clownfish normally do when the mother disappears).

At the interface of science and art, Jessica endeavors to make meaningful discoveries and to convey those results broadly and creatively to impact diverse populations. To reach her audiences she uses photography, animation, illustration, cinematography, science comics, wood burning, alcohol markers, water colors, acrylics and more.

Jesus' Ministry of Anti-Oppression
Jesus said he was called to give good news to the poor.  This might mean that he intended to minister to those who are poor in attitude, poor in spirit, or poor in self confidence.  Jesus said he was called to give freedom for prisoners.  This might mean the prison of self limitation, the prison of narrow mindedness, the prison of negativity and scarcity in your thinking. Jesus said he was called to give recovery for the Blind. What are your blinders? What do you miss?  What do you choose not to see?  What do you fail to acknowledge?  This Sunday we will look at the ministry of the Historical Jesus to see how his work informs our values for social justice and anti-oppression.

Jesus: The Radical

We celebrated the birth of this important person in our liberal religious tradition, now let us consider some of the radical teachings that new research into early Christianity and ancient scriptures are illuminating. Join us as we consider the "secret teachings" of Jesus that the empire tried to destroy.

JoAnn Damron-Rodriguez
Please join us for the opening of a special exhibit by artist JoAnn Damron-Rodriguez as she presents her debut show, “Dreams,” on Sunday, December 7, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. The show will run on our Art Wall through Sunday, December 28, and is open to the public Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on weekdays by appointment.

JoAnn Damron-Rodriguez recently retired as a university professor and has moved into the art world to help convey her feelings and experiences of the dream world. A self-taught artist, JoAnn communicates her feelings and expressions about dreams by combining ink, paint, and textured acrylic mixtures with photographs, appropriated art, words, and objects.

JoAnn notes that the many different types of media, vivid color palettes, and subsequent layers allow her to more fully represent the depths, disjunctures, and fragments that shape many of our dreams. Through her art, she hopes to help convey an understanding of how the feelings expressed by dreams relate to conscious life.

JoAnn is at the beginning of her artistic career after retiring from an illustrious career in education. She was an Adjunct Professor of Social Welfare at UCLA, and received the 2006 Distinguished Teaching Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Council on Gerontology (CCGG). She has over 20 years of experience in health, mental health, and hospice care. She has served on multiple editorial boards and scientific review committees and has published extensively on geriatric education, diversity in aging, and elder care.

John Christensen

Celebrate Life Through the Paintings of John Christensen

The vibrant paintings exploring everyday life as observed by Venice, California-based artist John Christensen will be on display in Forbes Hall throughout December for all art lovers to savor.

Christensen describes his creations as American primitive art. You and fellow art aficionados will have fun recognizing locations you’ve visited as represented in his bold works featured in the show “Full of Life.”

You may relate to his depiction of driving on a freeway but then might be surprised by the sky above filled with hawks. Other works tell stories about fighting in the streets of Venice, hanging out at a favorite lifeguard station, or catching the perfect wave. His intriguing, multigenerational subjects are captured pursuing common life activities on the pier, at work, or riding the bus.

Self-taught, Christensen grew-up in the city of Santa Monica and seeks out strange, funny, and meaningful activities of people and animals. He is particularly interested in the world’s penumbras and in-betweens and in the places where differences of all kinds meet. Some of his favorite things are road-trips, early morning coffee, and just walking around. Faith, humor, wonder, and the fun of discovery motivate his work.

Don’t miss your chance to meet the artist and talk about his style and choices at the opening reception Sunday, December 1.
