Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Very few movies have a scene in which Nietzsche and a Pope (even if it is only Alexander) are mentioned together. This thought-provoking film explores the role of memory (and deeper parts of the soul) in the elusive dimension of life we call love.

Ethics and Authenticity

The recent spate of fake memoirs raises questions about ethics, authenticity, and the appropriation of o t h e r s? experiences. These questions are especially compelling for Unitarian Universalists, whose searc h for truth leads us to borrow wisdom anywhere we can find it. (Remarks by Cynthia Cottam)

Evelyn Meyer

Evelyn Meyer is a “trained naif” who remembers colors of tropical fruits sold by a New York street vendor, the toothpaste-gel blue of an Alaskan iceberg, the orangepurple sunsets over the mountains of Mexico. When the color palette in her mind’s eye doesn’t offer her the right blend, she invents a new color to fit into paintings full of pattern and detail, often peopled by angels or mythical figures.

Ms. Meyer describes herself as a N.Y. artist with a BFA, MA, and MSW who travels in Europe “for my roots,” through the U.S. “for my history,” and in Mexico “for my soul.” She likes to think of herself as someone who sees the world with the eyes of a traveler — where each new place has many stories to tell — about its present and past spirit — as if in a dream. When seeing her paintings, one sees her influences: folk art, textile design, architecture, and anthropology.

Ms. Meyer now lives and works in Los Angeles, painting and making collages in California colors. She is also extending a limited visit to her penthouse in Westwood, where she has an amazing floor-to-ceiling collection of “outsider” art that has been featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and in many publications. There is room for 25 people to visit, see and hear a talk by Evelyn about the art. On Saturday, April 21, from 12 to 2 p.m., Beverly Alison has arranged for this eye candy to be seen. Reservations are required and the address is available when you call Beverly. This is a splendid way to see rooms full of the best outsider art in our country.
Evelyn Meyer - "Every Work is a Joyful surprise"
Brighten up your winter by checking out the bright, psychedelic-inspired works by artist Evelyn Meyer. We look forward to seeing you at the opening reception Sunday, January 8 from 12 to 1:30 pm. The exhibit will be hung by New Year’s Day and run through the end of the month. (Please note that the opening reception this month is NOT on the first Sunday.)

Evelyn Meyer, although an experienced artist at 82, has recently discovered a new way to create art, which will be showcased on the January Art Wall. “I found psychedelic poster board in pink, orange, green and yellow,” Evelyn says. “It has been an adventure working on them.…The colors you think you are painting come out differently and every work is a joyful surprise.”

Evelyn Meyer has been creating art since age three, changing her style as her artistic needs changed. She has also written many training materials and helped create two documentary films on preparing for retirement, notated by AARP: “A Week Full of Saturdays” and “So What if It Rains.” Evelyn also prepared course material for the docents at Carnegie Hall.

According to Evelyn’s artist book, which accompanied her exhibition at the Santa Monica College Emeritus Gallery in 2009, “As an international language, art speaks beyond culture as a medium for conversation and exchange of ideas.” Evelyn currently mentors art students from Santa Monica College, and she paints, and paints, and paints! Evelyn appreciates that our church gives young artists the opportunity to show their work in a welcoming setting, and has graciously decided to give UU Santa Monica 100% of the proceeds from the sale of her art.

Ever Deepening and Healing Connections,

The poet Wendell Berry writes, "Only by restoring the broken connections can we be healed." Our lives and our spirit are nurtured and restored by connections with nature, with others, with what is holy in life. Worship is an attitude and a practice that can lead to ever deepening and healing connections. The Rev. Dr. Lawrence Palmieri Peers is the Extension Education and Research Director with the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations in Boston. His work focuses on congregational growth and vitality. He leads trainings and consultations with congregations throughout the continent. He was the primary editor of The Congregational Handbook (1994 edition).

Every Breath I Take

Our speaker will offer some thoughts on the all-pervasive nature of one?s sexual orientation, the ways it permeates one?s being, informing decisions, actions, and reactions. It is a core element of most people, if not every person. However, for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people, outside the realms of politics or intimate relationships, the characteristic is often thought not to exist. Rebecca will share her experiences concerning ways in which this issue plays itself out in her life. Rebecca is a lesbian mother of two who lives in Los Angeles with her partner of 15 years and their two daughters, ages 3 and 6. She is active in her synagogue, in GLIDE (an antihomophobia speakers bureau), and in her children?s schools. Music: Sara Andon, flute

Every Small Step, Celebration Sunday

This is the Sunday we have set aside to celebrate who we are and what we may become as a church community. We urge all friends and members to join us as we renew our vision and our commitment to the future. We need each of you to fulfill the promise and to enjoy brunch together following each service. The choir will sing at both services.
