FIA and Peace and Social Justice - The Faces of Homelessness

Set-up for this event begins at 6pm

Homelessness in greater Los Angeles is a growing crisis. Conditions in Downtown LA recently shocked a visiting UN monitor on extreme poverty, and recently, the LA Times Editorial Board called these conditions “a national disgrace.”

UU Santa Monica’s FIA Peace & Social Justice Committee, as well as Organizing For Action (OFA) SoCal will present a panel of experts, advocates and journalists in an interactive discussion exploring the many facets of the homelessness issue and the numerous challenges facing our brothers and sisters who are un-housed. There is much to learn and understand, but also much to be done; the evening will include a call to action for more citizens to get involved, and ways to do so. Contact: Kathleen Hogue, dre@uusm.org or James Witker, jwitker@mac.com.

Parking at the UCLA structure is available for this event.

You Gotta Know When to Walk Away

Theme:
Perseverence

Rev. Kikanza Nuri-Robins
Worship Associate:

When is enough ... enough?  Quitting requires courage and faith that if you do it differently next time, you might meet your goal.  How can you strategically end one endeavor and  mindfully move to another when people are screaming, "Don't Quit!"

We are all looking for love.  But in the world today, there is a struggle between reaching out and asking for what we need and avoiding what we most fear.  But this story is as old as time.  This service is an Intergenerational Soap Opera about love, fear, drama, intrigue, paranoia, ambition and finding out what really matters.

Audio for this sermon is unavailable.

What to Know about Good and Evil While Being Trumped

Theme:
Perseverence

Anyone who has seen the new Star Wars movie, the Last Jedi, knows that the difference between good and evil is not simple.  One can not look for Good in only the left or right of politics.  Cannot find right in only the top or bottom of class.  Evil is not just seen in the black or white of race.  Choosing Love and Courage over Hate and Fear is the religion of our times.  And such times it requires us to be able to see the multi-dimensionality of Love and Justice.

Here if You Need Me

The Rev. Kate Braestrup's path to ministry came to her by calling her toward and through pain.  When faced with one of the most painful moments of her life, she had to decide if she was going to turn around at the sight of her worst fears, or call forth what she needed to face them.  Calling forth our courage requires both something within us and something around us.  This is a service on how we call for and share courage between us.

Open Meditation

Our group gathers twice a month to sit together quietly for 20 minutes, to walk with gentle awareness for seven minutes, and to explore the integration of meditation with ordinary life through reading and sharing. It is an ongoing drop-in group, so feel welcome to join us whenever it feels right to you. We have found that this time of quiet meditation and shared exploration can be deeply nourishing – a time of simply “being” amidst all the “doing” of our lives. Anyone who senses they would benefit from 20 minutes of silent, non-guided sitting is welcome to join us, whether they have experience or not. Please note there is some time for walking in the courtyard so bring warm clothes in cool weather.
Date / Time:
Repeats every month on the first Friday and on the third Friday until Fri May 25 2018 except Fri May 18 2018.
