Wandering in the Wilderness

Theme:
Quest
Sunday, July 3, 2022 - 10:30am
Rev. Michael Walker
Worship Associate:
Amy Brunell
Wandering in the Wilderness is about journeys and quests. About the journey not the destination. Not all who wander are lost.

The Rev. Michael Walker, who was ordained into the Unitarian Universalist ministry at the First UU Society of San Francisco in 2010, after completing studies at the Pacific School of Religion and in internship at the First UU Church of San Diego. For the next 11 years, he provided interim ministry services in Massachusetts, Washington, Pennsylvania, California and Illinois – in that order… Many cross-country moves! He has taken a hiatus from parish ministry to complete requirements for his PhD studies, and currently lives in Los Angeles.

Through his adult life, Mike has been a nurse, Navy veteran, ordained minister, and now a PhD Candidate in Clinical Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute, after completing studies and currently working on a dissertation about trauma experienced in religious settings. He has therapeutic experience working with groups, adult and adolescent individuals, and adult couples, in secular and religious settings, including the military, LGBTQ+ and HIV communities, and in private psychological practices. He maintains his connection to the UU movement as a Community Minister.

UUA General Assembly Worship Service

Unite with us for the largest annual gathering of UUs in worship, a service that is a highlight of the General Assembly (GA) of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). The Office of the UUA President, the Rev. Susan Frederick Gray, is pleased to announce that the Rev. Gretchen Haley, Senior Minister of Foothills UU Church in Fort Collins, CO, will lead the Sunday Service at GA in Portland, OR. Additional worship team members include the Rev. Sean Neil-Barron and the Rev. Shari Halliday-Quan. The GA Choir, a talented group of singers rehearsing daily during the conference, will enhance the impact of the service. This powerful, communal worship experience will stream live, so we can gather in spirit with UUs across the continent — with Rev. Jeremiah in our Sanctuary or while staying home* — at this special time, 9:30 am.

*UPDATE:  For those who wish to view the UUA General Assembly service online, instead of live in our Sanctuary, please note that we will NOT be streaming it on our UUSM Facebook or YouTube pages. Instead, you will be able to view it at 9:30 a.m. on the UUA's own pages at https://www.uua.org/ga/off-site/2022/sunday-worship OR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66NdjDRPvhU

Nature Journaling with Dorothy Steinicke - Zoom/Online

Nature Journaling with Dorothy Steinicke

Sunday, July 31, from 2:30pm-4pm

Ferns

Join us to learn about ferns and examine and journal on them.

Ferns are non-flowering, non-seed producing plants that reproduce by spores.  They are an ancient lineage of plants that existed on earth long before the dinosaurs.  They are interesting because they are different from all other plants.  They are also exceptionally beautiful.  Participants in this session are encouraged to have a fern or piece of a fern with them in order to make direct observations.  They are also encouraged to have a magnifying glass in order to get a closer look.  Photos will be provided if it is not possible to have an actual fern.

A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Dorothy Steinicke has spent years encouraging people to experience the natural world. She leads hikes for children and for adults in Topanga Canyon, Ballona Wetlands, and Dockweiller State Beach.

"Finding Your Place" - UUSM Sunday Service - June 19, 2022

Rev. Kikanza Nuri-Robins, preaching
Cassie Winters, worship associate

We teach about the uniqueness of all people, and though we know that we have gifts differing from one another, we focus on our flaws and short comings. We apologize for who we are and how we are. We strive to be better, but we never acknowledge that we started out as good. If you believe in the inherent dignity and worth of every person, then you must find your place. Find the way and the place in the world, where you can be your best self. #yourbestself #thisisme #prideinself

Hiking - Offsite

We will gather at the church on the last Saturday of the month, June 25, at 9:00 am to carpool to our next adventure: Malibu State Park Rock Pool and Century Lake. The hike is a 3-mile round trip; elevation gain is 300 ft. In general, hikers should be able to go up four flights of stairs. Those on the Hiking Group email list will receive a map with details about the hike. If the weather forecast is over 90 degrees then we will cancel. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sturdy hiking shoes, water, a cell phone, and some snacks for the leader (JUST KIDDING!).

Please RSVP to hiking@uusm.org.

"Counting Blessings" - UUSM Sunday Service - June 12, 2022

Rev. Kikanza Nuri-Robins, preaching
Cassie Winters, worship associate

I know a number of people who respond to queries about their well-being by saying, “I’m Blessed.” My response is to affirm the obvious and then ask, “Yes, and are you being a blessing?” It is important to acknowledge all of the good things in one’s life. It is also important TO BE one of the good things in the lives of others.

"Queer Blessings: I Had a Bad Dream!" - UUSM Sunday Service - June 5, 2022

Rev. Jeremiah Kalendae, preaching
Robbert Schalekamp, worship associate

Our liberal congregations were among the first to fight for LGBTIAQ+ rights and they were in instrumental in securing those rights after decades of activism and community-building. Join us for our annual service honoring Pride Month. We will offer “I Had a Bad Dream!” by the late kweer scholartivist Ibrahim Farajajé. We will also commission our newly reformed Pastoral Associates — and the Annual Meeting will follow our worship service. We hope you will join us in the Pride March next week as well!
