Women Speak Out

A compilation of historic and current voices in word and song, portraying women who are not afraid to speak out about their love and care of humanity even when it is an unpopular thing to do within a society. Ellen Geer is the artistic director of the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. Her sister, Melora Marshall, is a singer and songwriter. Music: Ellen Geer & Melora Marshall

Women's Alliance Meeting

Come, Sing a Song with the Women's Alliance on January 19

UUs gather for services each week, all of us creating the worship together of many elements, words, music, and customs. All my life I have studied this process, and songs by UU women resonate strongly for me.

You are warmly invited to the first in a heartfelt series called, "A Year of Living Musically." Three of Carolyn McDade's wealth of songs you know from our hymnal: "Spirit of Life," "Come, Sing a Song with Me," and "We'll Build a Land." At annual women's retreats across what she has called "a continent in song" she has taught dozens more. These are insightful, healing, empowering works to cherish each soul, build community, honor the earth. Come taste a few of these on Sunday, January 19, 10:10 to 10:55 am, in the Courtyard.

All are welcome, whether you think of yourself as a singer or not.

Carolyn is leading a women's retreat nearby on Friday-Saturday, February 21-22, at the United Church of Christ in Simi Valley.                                                                                                                                                                     Registration: joanmcclel@aol.com; recordings: CarolynMcDadeMusic.com

Women's Alliance Meeting

Come, Sing a Song with the Women’s Alliance - April 13

UUs gather for services each week, all of us creating the worship together of many elements, words, music, and customs. All my life I have studied this process, and songs by UU women resonate strongly for me. You are warmly invited to the second in a heartfelt series, “A Year of Living Musically.” For Spring the music is by Grace Lewis-McLaren, whose hymnal gifts include:

“Touch the earth, reach the sky! Walk on shores while spirits fly over the ocean, over the land, our faith a quest to understand.”
“Touch the earth, reach the sky! Hug the laughter, feel the cry.
May we see where we can give, for this is what it means to live.”

While serving as Director of Music/Organist for several UU congregations, Grace wrote a number of anthems, hymns, and chants. She taught me some at district women’s retreats when she was at the San Diego church. She has degrees from Union Seminary School of Sacred Music in New York City and Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara.

Her tunes, harmonies, and lyrics are carefully crafted, reflecting a life fully lived in family, community, and spirit. Here’s a fun one; you can play tambourine on the chorus to make it sound just right:

“The inherent worth of all, value comprehensive, this our UUology, sacrament intensive. ”
“Yah, yah, yes I am, I’m a Unitarian, Yah, yah, yes I am, I’m a Unitarian. You can count on me. Hey!”
“When it comes to questioning, I am in my glory. If you want to preach to me, better know your story.”
“Yah, yah, yes I am, I’m a Unitarian, Yah, yah, yes I am, I’m a Unitarian. You can count on me. Hey!”

Come sample a few Songs of Grace on Sunday, April 13, 10:10 to 10:55 a.m., in the Courtyard. All are welcome, whether you think of yourself as a singer or not.

Women's Alliance Meeting
Women's Alliance Meeting

Come Sing a Song with the Women's Alliance -- July 6

We'll raise “Songs of Heart, Spirit, Action” for our summer circle. UUs gather for services each week, all of us creating the worship together of many elements, words, music, and customs. All my life I have studied this process, and songs by UU women resonate strongly for me. You are warmly invited to the third in a heartfelt series, “A Year of Living Musically.”

Come sample several on Sunday, July 6, 11:10 to 12:30 p.m., in the Courtyard. These are songs about grounding our behavior in the heart and spirit, something many women have written and sung about over the ages. (I prepared song sheets for the Pride Parade but was so happily blown away by my first experience there that the lyrics stayed in my backpack; so let's share them soon.) All are welcome for one song or a dozen, whether you think of yourself as a singer or not.

Then on Sunday, July 20, we'll help prepare the annual Interweave Picnic, which starts likewise, right after the 10 a.m. service. If you can bring salad, hot dogs or buns, dessert, or drinks, or help with the hands-on tasks of the day, let me know.

In 1927 our church and our Women's Alliance were founded. We have continued the living tradition by providing ordinary and extraordinary opportunities for interesting programs, leadership training, fundraising, worship, friendship, good food, feminist studies, community outreach, and personal growth; see also the UU Women's Federation at www.uuwf.org

Women's Fellowship Envisioning Meeting

As we begin to think about how we want to be in community together as we emerge from the pandemic, you are invited to a “Victuals and Visioning” session around ministry that centers community who identify as women, genderfluid, genderqueer, and non-binary.

We’ll meet in the shade structure, share scrumptious salads, and take stock of all the ways we’ve been gathering in ministry over the past few years. We’ll also consider how the eight elements of effective ministry figure into current and imagined offerings. This is a “get (re)acquainted gathering and brainstorming session.” Everyone and all ideas are welcome. Bring a salad if you can, or pick up a baguette or beverage to bring with you.
