Practicing for DeBenneville

Practicing for de Benneville — Bringing the Mountains to Santa Monica Mark your calendars. On Sunday, August 12, we will recreate Camp de Benneville Pines on our very own church patio. Join us after service for songs and crafts, a tie-dye display, a photo show, and sign up for our “real” camp in September. Then, in conjunction with Second-Sunday Supper, come at 5 p.m. for campish games and activities. Campish supper is at 6 p.m., maybe a talent show at 7 p.m. (?) followed by a campfire with songs and s’mores. Lots of campish fun — don't miss it.

Prayer Bead Workshop

Please plan to attend both sessions.

Week One:  Rev. Jeremiah will share the history of prayer beads in various cultures and religions--

Rosary, Tasbih, Japamala,  Catholic, Anglican, Islamic, Pagan, Buddhist.

Types of prayer and ways to adapt them to fit various UU beliefs.

Week Two: Keeping in mind what we have learned about the purpose, intention

and symbolism of materials in prayer beads, we will make our own prayer beads.

Praying Our Lives
Praying to a God Who Laughs

The story of Abraham and Sarah includes God coming to them announcing that Sarah will bear a child.  But by this time Sarah and Abraham are nearly a hundred years old (they lived a long time back then).  Sarah's reaction to bringing children into the world is to laugh.  Why does she laugh?   We will think about the laughter that's important for every community to have and also offer appreciation and praise for DRE Kathleen Hogue on her last Sunday with us at UUCCSM.

President

I joined UUSM, along with my husband, Michael, in May 2015, after attending for about six months as visitors. I am very happy that we made that decision. We’ve gotten to know so many wonderful people who share our values. We’ve had the opportunity to experience countless beautiful moments of conversations, meals, performances, and, of course, the services.

I have participated in three Heart to Heart groups and am participating in Beloved Conversations. I’m on the coffee committee when we meet in person. I’ve served one term on the board as a Member-at-Large and Vice President and I am nominated for my first year as President. I was on the search committee for our developmental minister, am presently on the COVID steering committee, and have also participated in a variety of meetings and planning sessions. Michael and I have tried to make meaningful contributions to UUSM, including becoming part of the Sustainability Fund. We believe in this place.

I have been awed by the grace with which this community has met the challenges brought by the pandemic. I am honored to be among the nominees this year and excited about the opportunity to serve as Board President as we move toward being together in person again.

Primal Humanism An Encounter With the Holy

Somewhere along the line humanism became equated or confused with atheism, or worse, a purely secular view of the world. The deeper meaning of humanism has strong religious sentiments as its foundation.
