Just Us
Justice is Flowing

Almost 60 years ago a small group of people led by Eleanor Roosevelt gave voice to a collective yearning for justice, equality, and freedom called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Charlie Clements will preach about its impact and its relationship to the programs of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. Clements was appointed CEO and president of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee over a year ago. He is a well known public health physician and human rights activist. His book Witness to War was the basis for an Academy Award-winning documentary of the same title.

Justice Sunday

Singer and activist Holly Near will join us for this special service dedicated to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee work for justice. She writes, We can gather together to remember our highest selves and find the courage to stand up for peace and justice. Our country has been a leading model of social change m ovements in the past. We can do it again. Her presence on Justice Sunday will inspire and educate.

Justin Tzorfas - Nature-Inspired Vibrant Landscapes

Bring the vibrant world of nature indoors this February when landscape artist Justin Tzorfas joins the UU Santa Monica Art Wall. We look forward to seeing you at the Opening Reception on Sunday, February 5 from 12:00 noon – 1:30pm. The exhibit will run through the end of the month.

Justin Tzorfas is a young artist creating dazzling landscape paintings inspired by his love of nature. This twenty year old college student has already created a vibrant collection of works early in his career as an artist. Inspired by the local landscapes of Southern California, Justin’s works portray a variety of natural settings: from oceans, to meadows to tropical motifs.

Justin explains that his love of art and nature started early and was inspired by childhood moments with his mom, “I grew up gardening with my mom…She taught me how to grow organic fruits and vegetables as well as flowers in our backyard. We would also go to pet stores to see all the exotic animals. My love for nature came from doing things with my mom. It has inspired me to paint landscapes…”

Justin’s persistence in his passion has led to a recent feature in issue 27 of Artists Portfolio Magazine, Annual Portraits Issue. His explains, “Art is what I feel and how I feel. Art is my infinite outcome of feelings…I put my visions and memories of nature on canvas.” We are very proud to welcome this young, emerging artist to the Santa Monica Art Wall. Come down and take a look at the variety of landscapes that our region inspires!

Katherine Genikov

This April, we are pleased to exhibit works by Katherine Genikov. We look forward to seeing you at the Opening Reception on Sunday, April 3 from 12:00 noon – 1:30pm. The exhibit will run through the month of April.

Katherine Genikov is a Russian-American artist who paints with oils and paints with music, sounds, performance art, and time-based art forms. She says her “… process is multilayered, beginning with music compositions that are then developed into paintings and drawing, created in trance like states.” This combination of creating visual art through a trance-like state induced by auditory sounds, allows her to create images that are striking and memorable.

Katherine Genikov currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She has presented her works at many California galleries and shows, including Human Resources, (Los Angeles); The LAB, (San Francisco); and Blackstone Gallery (Los Angeles). She holds a BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute.

Keep Turning the Pages (Online Service)
What do we do when the truth is hard to face and the outcome is frightening? How do we stay in community and get ourselves through the hard truths, together?

We welcome to our pulpit Mylo Way, a lifelong UU who has served as a chaplain in congregational, conference, and hospital settings. Mylo studied at Starr King School for the Ministry and is transmasculine genderqueer.

Keeping Score
Rev. Rebecca will reflect on ministry and motherhood and we will welcome children to our community with a ceremony of Child Dedication at the 11am service.

Raising children is a sacred stewardship and a daily spiritual practice. A child dedication is an act of affirmation; a recognition of the reverence for life that we speak of in our first principle.  On May 14, we will formally welcome children into our congregation.  As a part of the service we will dedicate ourselves to nurture the inherent sense of personal dignity and worth of our children. Although we call this ceremony a Child Dedication, it is really a dedication of the primary caregivers and the congregation to nurture these children with those values that promote responsible and generous living. It is a celebration of both responsibility and promise. If you would like to participate, please contact DRE Kathleen Hogue at dre@uusm.org no later than May 8.
