FIA and Peace and Social Justice - The Faces of Homelessness Set-up for this event begins at 6pm Homelessness in greater Los Angeles is a growing crisis. Conditions in Downtown LA recently shocked a visiting UN monitor on extreme poverty, and recently, the LA Times Editorial Board called these conditions “a national disgrace.”  UU Santa Monica’s FIA Peace & Social Justice Committee, as well as Organizing For Action (OFA) SoCal will present a panel of experts, advocates and journalists in an interactive discussion exploring the many facets of the homelessness issue and the numerous challenges facing our brothers and sisters who are un-housed. There is much to learn and understand, but also much to be done; the evening will include a call to action for more citizens to get involved, and ways to do so. FIA Booth at Westside Coalition Community Involvement Fair
The Peace and Social Justice Committee of Faith in Action is hosting its booth again this year on Monday, January 19 at the annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Westside Coalition Community Involvement Fair immediately following the program (9 a.m. to noon). The SGI Temple is on the North West corner of Wilshire at 6th Street. The Community Involvement Fair is a luncheon with a number of community organizations having booths from 12 to 1 p.m. across the street on the South East corner of Wilshire at 6th. The Speaker at this year’s event is Gabriella Rosco from CLUE, who has spoken at our church and with whom the FIA Commission works on several projects. All church members are invited. FIA CommissionSarah Mae Harper and James Witker, co-chairsThe mission of the Faith In Action Commission is to coordinate social action efforts in the church, empowering the congregation to choose social justice issues for study and action, and integrating those activities fully into the overall life of the congregation in a way that is rooted in the moral and ethical values of our faith, as expressed in our Vision Statement and the Principles and Purposes and Statements of Conscience of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Action is based on careful research, analysis and thoughtful study embracing service, education, witness and advocacy issues through a range of activities including task forces, community organizing, study groups, alliance building, committees and ad hoc groups as needed. FIA Committee Fundraiser Faith in Action Commission is having a fund-raiser with church artisans providing wares of jewelry, pottery, and other small art items, as well as edible goods. The event takes place on Sunday, February 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 12 to 3 p.m. with a reception at 12:30 p.m. This is also an opportunity to invite friends and family who don’t necessarily come to church to show off our community. FIA Craft Fair
This year’s UUSM Member Art Wall will feature: Jeremy Arnold, Bettye Barclay, Bob Dietz, DRE Kathleen Hogue, Cynthia Kelly, Amy Lacombe, Kim Miller, Ralph Martel, Carol Ring, Diana Spears and Greg Wood.
The FIA Craft Fair is also an annual event benefitting the Committees under the overall umbrella of FIA: the Green Committee, which deals with climate issues and overall sustainability, they were instrumental in bringing the church updated to win sustainability award (including an alley plug-in for electric or hybrid cars) and they also work with a South Central community's program of sustainability to the central city poor; the Hunger Taskforce which does monthly Lunches for Bunches; and the Peace and Social Justice Committee, which has worked with car wash workers (and was able to get one car wash to unionize), works with CLUE to support worker's rights and living wage, works with detainees, and supports one member who was arrested at a KKK rally; Peace and Social Justice also does prison support work (school supplies and letter writing), and a recent campaign which supplied backpacks to the homeless filled with donated goods (toothpaste, socks, soap, etc.), soon to be an annual event.
The Faith In Action Craft Fair sells artisan wares (jewelry, pottery, paintings ,etc.); gourmet edibles and other new and exciting items. We also display further information about the involved Committees to keep people informed - especially the non-church members who come to event.
