Today we celebrate transgender people everywhere and explore the beautiful diversity of gender identities and expressions in our world.  We also mark Passover and Palm Sunday and consider what our Jewish and Christian heritages really teach about gender and queerness.  Don’t forget your Bibles this Sunday!

The Transgender Pride Flag was first displayed in 2000.  Designer Monica Helms describes it:  “The light blue is the traditional color for baby boys, pink is for girls, and the white in the middle is for those who are transitioning, those who feel they have a neutral gender or no gender, and those who are intersexed. The pattern is such that no matter which way you fly it, it will always be correct. This symbolizes us trying to find correctness in our own lives.”  For some UU perspectives, consider the resources on a page that begins with “10 Ways to Be More Welcoming and Inclusive of Transgender People.”

Universalism declares love has the power to restore and transform all things. Our religious ancestors believed a great compassion would someday save all souls. Today we explore our historical theological doctrine in greater depth and its potential impact on our faith and the world.

Promises feed hope.  Commitment is fed by passion.  Covenants are sustained by love.  What does it mean when you break a promise or make a commitment?  Are the criteria you are using serving you and your relationships?  This morning we will explore how your word nurtures, sustains, or erodes your relationships and spotlights your character.

The wisdom scriptures hold that faith can be worn as spiritual armor in difficult circumstances.  With growing threats of domestic terrorism, fascism, and white supremacy in our culture, how can our liberal religious faith equip us to be successful in the struggle for justice and beloved community?  We will also honor the Hindu holiday Mahashivaratri this week, so be sure to join us for worship!

Nature Journaling with Dorothy Steinicke - Zoom/Online

Nature Journaling with Dorothy Steinicke

Sunday, March 14 from 2:30pm-4pm

Birds—part 2

In this nature journaling session we will continue to consider birds.  In the last session we focused on drawing from memory and from photos.  In this session we invite you to bring an object relating to birds; feathers, a blown down nest or even an egg, to have a physical object with you that you can explore and journal about.  We will also plumb our memories for bird encounters to journal about.

The nature journaling group has been meeting monthly for most of this pandemic year.  It is a great way to focus our minds on the gifts we receive from the natural world and the fact that, even if we are stuck at home, the natural world is all around us, we are part of it.

In the group we write and draw and consider aspects of nature.  No skill, experience or talent is required.  New participants are very welcome.

A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Dorothy Steinicke has spent years encouraging people to experience the natural world. She leads hikes for children and for adults in Topanga Canyon, Ballona Wetlands, and Dockweiller State Beach.
