Dining for Dollars

Dining for Dollars Wants You… … To Host an Event this Summer
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO OFFER?

Dear UUSM Community,

Dining for Dollars is this congregation’s fun and community-friendly program that also raises much-needed money. A win-win, for sure!

So put on your thinking cap and please consider hosting an event (or offering goods/service) for members and friends to bid on during our upcoming silent auction, which will be held online at a website called Auctria. Their banner looks like this:

If you would like to offer an EVENT or GOODS/SERVICE for people to bid on, please tell us about it by filling out this form to volunteer. If you prefer not to fill out the online form, you can simply email us at dining4dollars@uusm.org.

Or visit us at our table in the courtyard on Sundays after the Worship Service. Responses to our survey last month show that people are interested in attending events, most preferring outdoors for the sake of Covid safety. Bidding will begin Sunday, July 3 for events scheduled beginning Friday, July 8.

Thank you!

The Dining for Dollars Committee,
Karl, Barbara, Farrokh, Resa, Greg, and Pat

What is Dining for Dollars?

Dining for Dollars is a series of themed dinners and/or parties, generally held in members' homes (but also on boats or other venues available to the hosts), which are auctioned off to attendees as a fundraiser for the church.
Dining for Dollars is one of UUSM’s largest and most successful fundraisers of the year. Events, goods and services – it’s all there! Don’t be left out and miss the opportunity to lend financial support to our beloved community while enjoying the fellowship of community members in so many varied and interesting venues including - individual homes and spreading out onto fascinating SoCal sites!

How often are events held?
The auction for Dining for Dollars events is held once a year, and the individual events take place throughout the year.  (We have often have as many as 50, or more, events up for auction!)

Who may bid on and attend the events?
Bidding in the Dining for Dollars silent auction is open to anyone who attends the church, and the winning bidders attend the events.

How many events are there?
Usually about 50 different events each year, each with a different theme.

Dorothy Steinicke's Low Tide Beach Picnic<br> D4$ Event
What kinds of themes do hosts choose?
Ethnic meals (Indian, Italian, Mexican, French, etc.) are always popular. We've also had sailing trips, pancake breakfasts, bridge parties, pool parties, Shakespeare nights, murder mystery parties, and even a "Low Tide Beach Party" which attracted a very special guest (see photo at left of host Dorothy Steinicke and a large sea slug). The possibilities for themes are as varied and infinite as the hosts' imaginations.

How can I host a Dining for Dollars event?
Please note that Dining for Dollars has been CANCELLED for 2020, due to the COVID-19 crisis. We will be back in action in 2021.

When will the next round of bidding be held?
Please note that Dining for Dollars has been CANCELLED for 2020, due to the COVID-19 crisis. We will be back in action in 2021.

March 6 Sermon: Graying Gracefully!

Ours is increasingly a world of elders. By 2050, the number projects to 2 billion, and  for the first time in human history, our world will have more people 60 and over than children under age 15. Rev. Owen-Towle will address the complex issues of finishing life well.

The Rev. Dr. Tom Owen-Towle, in his 75th year, considers himself on the homestretch of life’s journey. He has been a parish minister since 1967 and is the author of two dozen books on personal relationships and spiritual growth. Tom and his life-partner, The Rev. Dr. Carolyn Sheets Owen-Towle, are the active parents of four children and seven grandchildren. Tom is a guitarist and parlor magician, who currently sings with seniors, mentors children and youth-at-risk, and volunteers with San Diego’s homeless. Tom considers it a privilege and joy to return to our Santa Monica congregation. He will have several of his books available for purchase,
including HOMESTRETCH: The Art of Finishing Life Well.
